Hola chicas y chicos! ¿Que tal?
Not a lot to report on since my last entry. We travelled up the coast of Peru to Punta Sal - it was a mammoth journey consisting of 3 buses and a tuk tuk - and found the sunshine! After carrying my boardies and sarong around for 2 months I finally got to use them! We had managed to catch up with the guys on the truck and had an awesome bbq on the beach and muchos cerveza. It was Robert's birthday so we made a special effort to mark the occasion - I dont think he appreciated the wig and feather boa though!! Chris gave us a fantastic fire show with his poi (and burnt off his armpit hair!) and then had a go at teaching me. We decided I wasn't ready for the fire though - thats next week's task!! (I'm joking mum!)
The guys on the truck left the next morning so we caught a tuk tuk a few km up the coast to Mancora. Its just as beautiful but a far more lively. And here our planned 2 days of relaxing became 4 and my freckles multiplied! Unfortunately I caught another stomach bug so was in bed for most of one day but I quickly recovered and am using the excuse of having missed meals to eat loads now!
From Mancora we travelled North to Cuenca in Equador. But not without a rather interesting border crossing - we live and we learn! But boy am I glad cops in the UK aren't as corrupt as this lot. We'd heard so many stories about bent taxi drivers and border police but with the best of advice and our wits about us we still got conned out of 20 USD each "entry tax" (we haggled it down from 40 USD - the fact that you can haggle a supposed tax definitely indicates its a con!!) and ended up paying the taxi more than planned but we really had no choice. He did manage to get us past the hour-long queue in immigration though so it was probably worth it. It was all safe though Mum, no worries!
The bus we then caught to Cuenca was delayed by 3 hours because of a protest blocking the road, then stopped every hour for people to get off, go to the loo, chat, buy food, faff about etc, so in total we arrived about 6 hours late and were rather annoyed!! But after a decent sleep in the hostal we had a good day in Cuenca. Its a beautiful colonial city - and home to the Panama hat! Didn't buy one though.
Rather mistakenly I thought it was a good idea to take advantage of happy hour last night... and then a bit of a bar crawl... and then a salsa club. So today I feel rubbish! The club was fun though - Im appalling at salsa however, just dont have that latin american wiggle gene!! I went with some guys from the hostal and one of them has a website that I promised I'd recommend to you all - it made Israeli news apparently. www.mynakedtrip.com
Right so today we had a 6 hr bus journey to Riobamba. Amazingly it took 5 hours and 58 minutes so thats a record! And its raining :o( not fair you guys were meant to keep the rain! We just bought tickets for "The most difficult railroad in the world" tomorrow so Im praying its going to be a nice day. We get to sit on the carriage roof too so I hope its not slippery!! Will let you know how it goes....!
Hope alls well with everyone, keep the emails / messages coming. And best of luck to everyone with exams!
Lots of love, miss you all, wish you were here xxxxx
