17/8/9 Queenstown
After breakfast we collected our skis and lift passes from the hire shop and went to catch the shuttle bus up to Coronet Peak, the nearest resort to Queenstown. it took half an hour to drive up to the resort and it was sunny and clear yet again...we are so lucky. Once at the base station we put on our gear and got on the first chair lift up the mountain. The ski area was one big bowl with lots of runs all leading down criss crossing each other down to two chair lifts. Unfortunately the snow wasn't brilliant and we had hard lumpy ice in the morning and slushy sticky soft snow in the afternoon, so it was pretty hard work. It was lovely weather all day and we had great views down into the valley floor which is pretty unusual to see as we are used to much higher skiing than the 1649m peak here. We could see the surrounding mountain peaks and the lakes and green valleys below so it was really lovely. We asked a fella to take our photo who had bashed his face skiing in the ice in the morning and unfortunately he fell over while taking it for us...doh !!!We left the mountain to return to Queenstown once the light started to fade, dropped off our hire stuff and got a shower. We then treated ourrselves to a curry as there was a two for one deal and they were really good. We spent the rest of our time catching up on the blog again and are virtually up to date at last.
18/8/9 Queenstown
We woke up early and Phil went off to finish his photo downloading while Liz did the laundry that had stacked up over the last week. Liz joined Phil in town and at about 12 we went back to the hostel with take away Fergburgers to grab some more layers as we were going up the Gondola. The gondola station was only 5 minutes walk from the hostel and we took a ride up the gondola and got amazing views over Queenstowns lake and mountain views. We then had 6 goes on the luge, the same ride as in Rotorua, racing each other down. It was a good laugh and Phil won all the races but Liz was deliberately going slowly to make him feel good !!! Yeah right Liz in your dreams loser !!!! We watched a helicopter come into land up at the top of the gondola, delivering some wealthy people in style and saw someone jump a bungy from the top too. At about 3.30pm we took the gondola down to town and called into a crazy golf place called Caddyshack at the bottom. We played a round of golf where all the holes were electronically driven with sounds and moving parts and we won a lolly each at the end...what a giggle. Liz managed 43 over par and Phil was 24 over so you can imagine how well we played !!! We did yet more blog for a short while and then looked around town for a cheap dinner and ended up having yet another curry, which was delicious too. We went to look for somewhere to have a drink and Phil was drawn like a moth to a flame to a shop called Licks Dessert Deli !! Liz couldn't stop him running in there at high speed towards the ice cream counter. He had ordered his double scoop cone before Liz could do anything to stop him....he says the diet starts tomorrow...yeah right, he has been saying that for about three weeks now !! The girl in the shop said that the ice cream there was low fat as it was made of milk instead of cream but it wasn't too convincing. You're not too thin yourself Ms 'I can't fit into my jeans' Smith. After that we had a couple of drinks in one of Queenstowns many bars before going to pack our bags for tomorrows bus trip to Christchurch and then bed.
