We're now about a week into our trip and adjusting nicely to the Buenos Aires lifestyle - plenty of steak, plenty of wine and plenty of sunshine!
Spanish school started yesterday so we're getting into a nice routine of having classes all morning, coming back to the hostel or going to a park to do our homework (it really is like being back at school) and then having the afternoon and evening to chill out/sight-see/socialise. We've managed to get round a lot of the main sights in Buenos Aires - the Recoleta cemetary (including Evita's grave which is slightly smaller than we had both pictured but is still always covered with fresh flowers); the markets and antique shops around San Telmo where we're currently staying and the newly developed area along the river.
They have also set aside a huge area of land by the river as an ecological reserve so we went for a lovely walk around there one afternoon and saw hummingbirds, parakeets and plenty of other birds and butterflies. Unfortunately it's also home to hundreds and hundreds of mosquitos so we weren't really able to stop and admire the scenery without gettting eaten alive! If we have time before we leave, we're hoping to go back armed with plenty of repellant and do one of the longer walks as it's a beautiful area and nice to escape from the slightly manic streets!
Saturday was also my introcution to the world of football. We went with a group of people from our hostel to La Boca to watch Boca Juniors play Racing. I have to say I wasn't really convined by the football and I'm reliably informed by people who actually know about these things that the standard wasn't that high but the Boca fans were amazing. They didn't stop singing through the entire match and, even though they lost, they kept going for a good half an hour after the final whistle so it was a great atmosphere... probably not quite enough to convert me to a football fan though!
In return for going to a football match we've also managed to go and watch some tango and are having a lesson tomorrow. On Sunday nights the square near our hostel converts into an outdoor milonga (tango hall) so there were at least thirty couples there dancing on a makeshift dancefloor in the middle of the square. I was very jealous not to be able to join in and although I'm sure one lesson won't go that far, it would be nice to be able to make it through one song on the dancefloor if we get the chance!
There's not too much else to report really apart from the fact that my bag did finally turn up late on Thursday night so I now have clean clothes which is a huge relief! We're in Spanish lessons until Friday and are then hoping to travel on to Iguzu Falls for the weekend.
Unfortunately the hostel won't let you connect cameras to their computers so we haven't been able to upload any of our photos yet but will try to get some on the site as soon as possible!
Lots of love to everyone
