Today we left Chamonix to continue on our journey through the mountains to Interlaken, Switzerland. We did some more sneaky brekky theft before we got on the train to tide us over during the trip, which involves about 4 different trains! We went from Chamonix to Martigny on the Mont Blanc express, then from Martigny to Visp, Visp to Spiez, & finally Spiez to Interlaken Ost train station! Phew! Fortunately from here on out most of our train journeys involve only 1 change (or none at all!). It's actually much easier to sit on the one train for 7 hours straight, than to have to move everything every hour, even if the journey's a little shorter.
It was really lovely to arrive in Interlaken & see how different the landscape is to Chamonix. Interlaken is a relatively small Swiss town in the mountains, which sits between two large lakes (hence the name). Because they are glacially fed (at least in part), they have that beautiful, rich, aqua blue colour, & are really REALLY cold! We spent the afternoon by the lake at Neuhaus, & despite our optimism in taking our bathers with us, I stuck literally one toe in & was like hell no!! We did see some people swimming though…crazy people. So instead we just sat by the lake & chilled out for an hour or so. It's so strange that it's so warm despite the fact that you can see snow capped mountains across the lake!
In the evening we made our own stir-fry for dinner because there's been a serious lack of vegetables at our disposal lately. Being in the land of cheese, meat, cheese, wine, & more cheese, the fact that I rather fancy a nice big plate of broccoli every now & then (well, actually, more often than that) is something that's a little hard to explain to the locals! Even Nigel said he actually FELT like having vegetables, which he said was a strange sensation that he'd never really experienced before :P I must be a good influence hehe
We also found the holy grail of Swiss cuisine in the frozen section of the super market; something that basically makes it worth coming to Switzerland in & of itself. Movenpick icecream. The most glorious, creamy, delicious icecream ever to exist!! Seriously, now I ate a lot of gelato on my travels through Italy & this still trumps them all. I've only had it once or twice before when I cam to Switzerland with my Dad many years ago & ever since then I have looked forward to having it again someday. We decided on a double cream vanilla with meringue pieces…OM nom nom nom nom nom nom :D
