We are now in Queenstown, and the weather is fab. Im in a t-shirt and shorts, which is very different to the last couple of pictures ive added where im dressed in full on winter kit! So, from Nelson we travelled to Greymouth....and ohmy gosh i've never been to an eerier town!We were told all the beds were booked up, although we had supposidly pre-booked with them, and got put in a porter-cabin out in the garden. This would have been ok if the place hadn't been so scary!Morwenna and I had to walk with each other to the cabin as we were scared to go alone, the hostel was like something from a horror film as there was just know-one around! Luckily we were only here one night, and 7.45 next morning we headed to Franz Josef.
We had all been really looking forward to Franz Josef, especially the glaciers. We chose the whole day glacier trip, which meant 8 hours walking about 16k on ice! We were given very sexy boots (as seen in my photos!) which gave me the worst blister on my heel. Most of the trekking to begin with was up purposely cut in steps in the ice, we had rope hand rails for this part which made it easier. Our guide would cut in any extra steps if we needed. Most of the ice for the first couple of hours was pretty muddy, we no spectacular formations so we were really pleased we chose the full day. Further up (about 800m above sea level) the ice was an amazing blue colour, and the formations were amazing. We climbed over big crevises, and went through amazing ice caves. Such a cool experience, especially as its such a natural thing. We even sat up on the ice to eat lunch, it got quite chilly as we were no longer moving and keeping warm, and also as my bum got pretty wet!
We arrived back at the hostel just in time for the free soup, just what we wanted after a chilly day out on the glacier!Next day we stayed in Franz Josef and chilled. We watched about 3 films and ate pop-corn, haha.
Another early start to head to Queestown, and this time it was an all day-er. We started at 7.45, and didnt arrive in Queenstown until about 6.30 in the evening! We planned to go to Milford Sound, but after asking about and finding out that it was a 12 hour day, with 9 of it being on a bus...(plus the fact it was $150!) we thought that we would spend the money on something else, perhaps white water rafting!
Last night we met up with Jacalyn and Sue again, for the last time before they head home, and went to the most amazing thai restaurant. Jacalyn text Mum to tell her this, making her pretty jealous as you can imagine!
Our hostel is really nice, it has a hot-tub which is cool. The only down side is the fact that we have a kind of kitchen-ette, and my bed is virtually on top of the cooker!haha.Today we are thinking of going up the gondola (cable car thing) and then have a go on the Luge (not quite sure what this is, but everyone talks about it....haha.)
Monday morning we are heading to Dunedin, just one night there as the only thing to do is go to the Cadbury chocolate factory!
