After travelling for 36 hours nearly, I arrived in the erly morning in La Paz, Bolivia, the world´s highest capital city! Flying over it in the dark was amazing seeing all the grid like streets, as we got closer to the ground I could see that the streets were actually just made up of little shacks with one street light every few houses. Fortunately, just as I was getting off the plane I started speaking to a lovely young American couple (with the cutest baby ever!), the lady was from La Paz and had come to visit family and so she helped me choose a taxi and spoke to the driver and took his details etc, so it was all legit! :)
The taxi drive was surreal as it was pitch black and we went through all these back streets, by the sides of the shanty towns. The only people that were around were old little Bolivian ladies in their traditional dress of huge colouful skirts, with loads of peticoats underneath, big wooly cardigans, knitted shawls and then a cute little hat perched on top of their plaited hair just to top it all off! Gutted I don´t have room in my backpack for one of those hats!
The altittude hit me as soon as I picked my bag up at the (miniscule!) airport, being over 3600metres above see level, the air here has a lot less oxygen in it and if you do anything like walking up stairs too quickly, you really feel light headed and breathless at the top!
After Alice arrived at our hostel we just chilled out for a bit and then eventually got let into our room which is lush- I need to make sure I don´t get used to the comfy beds, warm showers, nice cosy duvets- as I doubt it will be like this the whole way ;)
We did a bit of wandering round town yesterday, the streets are full of these crazy little mini buses, which are actually just like for 8 people and they have a person who shouts out of the window where the bus is going, called a Barker, and then all of a sudden the bus will screech to a holt and people will jump in, I swear there is like 20 people in each one. There the only buses they have- think I might give it a miss! And the strangest thing is that all you can here when your outside is people beeping their horns, for one in my life I´m not exaggerating!
Today we are off on a tourist bus to the Valle de Luna, the valley of the moon, and also to the Witches Market where they sell Llama Foetuses and other weird things witches need! Looking to find a funky Alpaca wool jumper too :)
Hopefully we´ll be heading off to the salt flats tomorrow evening on an overnight bus :)
Lots of love
