Fish Hoek, South Africa
So we arrived in Cape Town and went straight to View Point to see the fantastic Table Mountain. It's a stunning backdrop to the beautiful beach. We then went to our hostel and checked in before all going out for lunch (and 2 milkshakes!!). Marc and I then wondered round the town and went to the waterfront which was lovely. It's a really nice town and was so good to be in civilisation! We went out for our last dinner together and then a few of the group went out. The next morning was pretty uneventful and we said our goodbyes and went our separate ways. The only person I will keep in touch with is Marc - I got on with everyone in the group but they stayed in their pairs quite a lot and I dont think many of them will keep in touch.
Walter picked me up from the hostel and took me to the volunteer house where I met Astrid (after waiting an hour - TIA!). she showed me the house which I was so impressed with - theres a pool and tv with DVD played, and I am sharing a room with a girl called Emily. The only problem is that I was expecting 3 meals a day included and there's actually no food included at all. Hmmmmm.
There's been some issues in the house and I think I have come in at a turbulent time! The group is quite mixed - there's the younger ones and the older ones. The younger ones seem to party quite a lot and are quite messy and inconsiderate. It's like a student house. So the older ones hate it and have problems with the mess and noise. There's a middle aged couple who have left 3 weeks early because they can't stand being here anymore. I spent Sunday with them and Kate and Holly. Kate is 59 and Holly is 18 but she's quite geeky and doesn't approve of the other youngsters so sticks with the older ones. Anyway, we got the train to a place called Simons Town where we went and saw penguins. We also walked along the street watching the bike race that was taking place - 30000 cyclists riding round Cape Town! We had lunch out too and it was a lovely day. In the evening we watched a movie (this time i was with the younger group). They rent out movies all the time - in my first 48hrs at the house I'd watched 3!
I had my orientation on Monday with Thamzi. That lasted 5mins and I didn't really learn anything, but never mind. As id already been in the house a couple of days and been in Africa 2months I think I knew all I needed to. There was a bus / taxi strike so most people didn't bother with their projects, so I ended up at the beach with a couple of the other volunteers - so has been a really nice first few days in my new home.
