Tuesday 26th January.
Australia Day! Everyone has been hyping this up since we got here. Most people have the day off work and get drunk. It reminds me of St Georges Day back home. The big kids that we are, we decided to pass on the all day drinking and head to the theme park instead. So off to Dreamworld we went, gladly leaving behind 'horror time camp site'! We wore our matching Australia tops to get in to the spirit of things, which got a few comments throughout the day. We went on a couple of rollercoasters and spotted a huge lizard underneath us when we were on one of them. We stopped for lunch when it started to rain, and had to swerve the birds who were trying to get our food. We attempted to watch a Madagascar show but it turned in to a bit of a kids club so we snook out when they were getting everyone on stage to do the limbo. We did the river Rapids with two Aussie kids who were laughing at us screaming about getting wet. Kirsty wanted to go on a ride I didn't want to go on so I went to get on one that's like maelstrom at Drayton manor, which is a big circle you sit round then it swings up and side to side so you are facing the ground. As I got on it and it started to begin, it stopped and they announced it had broke down. By the time the mechanic came it was raining again, and once it was going and I was up in the air, it was heavy rain and I got drenched. Brilliant. I met back up with Kirsty who thought it was hilarious. We enjoyed the rest of the day before leaving at 4 to head back to surfers paradise. We checked back in to Down under hostel where we stayed two nights ago and were going to go to a pool party which had been going on since midday but decided it was probably nearly over so instead we got ready for when everyone came back from it so we could have a drink and socialise with everyone. We got some cider from the liquor store and headed to the pool table where people were gathering round. We met Jack and Jonny from Essex who we played pool with in doubles, and Ryan and Peter from Canada and Austria. There were so many people I struggled to remember everyone's names but we all got drunk and had a laugh. We ended up back at the liquor store hunting down more alcohol and most people were drinking Goon, which is a cheap wine that everyone seems to drink here. It does not taste good! The cinema room got converted in to a party room and Nick, who usually works on reception and runs the place, had the night off so was getting involved with everyone and got someone to be designated DJ for everyone too. We met so many new people and had such a good night without even leaving the hostel. I think I finally made it to bed about 3am. We were sharing a room with Josh from Canada and a guy from Mauritius who I only ever saw sleeping. Josh had been popping champagne earlier in the night so he was fast asleep by the time
I got to bed too! It was a great day and the people in the hostel were really nice, it made me realise I preferred the smaller hostels as they are more personal and it's easier to meet and get to know other people.
