It was Thursday 14th October when we arrived into Adelaide city. We had driven along the Great Ocean Road in a hire car and it was now time to return it.
After giving the keys back to Avis car hire we walked through the main street looking for a hostel for the night. We checked out a couple of backpacker hostels but were unhappy with them so we ended up staying at a Golden Chain hotel where we got a 10% discount as we were now Golden Chain members. We were only in town for a day and a half so paying extra for a hotel vs a hostel for one night wouldn't be too much of an issue.
We checked in, got showered, and went for a good Indian meal just down the road from our hotel. We got back very late as we ended up chatting to the waiter who is looking to travel to Thailand and Laos. We gave him a few ideas to assist him with his travel plan. Having a chat is one thing, but the guy wouldn't leave us alone. It was if we had booked a table for three.
The following morning we checked out of our hotel and stored our luggage into it's sister hotel across the road. The reason for this was the fact that we were flying out early morning at 6am to Perth meaning we would be up at 3am so didn't see the point of booking another night into a hostel/hotel. We thought we would stay out until early hours, collect our luggage and go to the hotel!! This didn't happen!! Read on...
The day went like this. We walked to Adelaide Zoo passing the oval cricket ground and cathedral. The zoo was amazing as we got close to many animals there. Lisa enjoyed spending time with the kangaroos as she was able to hug them which put a smile on her face. Mark loved watching the pelicans and there amazing ability to stand tall on one leg! Watching the pandas in their enclosure was also amazing. Look out for the many photos on our blog.
After visiting the zoo, we stopped off for a yummy ice cream and a burrito followed by browsing in the shops.
Adelaide is surrounded by parklands and has many churches, groovy cafes and pubs. We wern't that keen on Adelaide as we had been to Melbourne and loved the place which takes some beating.
The evening started drawing in and we were aware we had no accommodation and that staying out until early hours may not be a good idea. We therefore took a walk around town to find a hostel so we could get some sleep before our 4 hour flight to Perth!
It started to rain and was a pretty chilly evening so we didn't want to be hanging around. We started to give up but came across a YHA. We managed to get a room for the night where we had a great sleep until the alarm sounded at 3am signalling it was time to throw back the sheets and get showered.
We had a taxi booked for 3:50am which took 10 minutes to get to the airport. The airport had just opened when we arrived but things soon went wrong.
