We arrived in Melbourne and Kirsty and Michael met us at the airport and so we got a lift back to Kirsty's (who we met in India) who kindly put us up for our time in Melbourne. It was good to catch up again and Cassie and Kate even gave up a bed for us. Thanks guys!
Tuesday 9 January 2007
Had a walk around Melbourne which has a certain elegance about it. There are some nice old buildings which we walked past: The Parliament Building of Victoria, Town Hall etc. We got the lift up a few floors in the art deco Manchester Unity Building and the lift up to the 35th floor of the Sofitel Hotel where you get good views from the toilet windows! There are some fancy Victorian shopping arcades and little alleys full of cafes and restaurants. Also looked at Federation Square, Flinders Street railway station, Docklands area.
In the evening, we went with Kirsty and Michael to St Kilda Beach where we met up with Rebecca (who we also met in India) for a meal, which was very nice. We had a wander along the beach and saw the exciting Luna Park! St Kilda has some great cake and ice cream shops so we sampled some of that too.

Tempertaure got to 37 today! Visited Royal Botanic Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens where Captain Cook's house is. This was shipped over from Yorkshire in 1934, rebuilt brick by brick. It is supposedly where Cook's parents lived and dates from the 1700s. In the evening went to the bustling Queen Victoria markets full of stalls and full of people. Loads of food to choose from. Ed got 'roo burger, emu sausage and a bit of croc thrown in too!
Thursday 11 January
Looked around Fitzroy area of town and then Lisa went to the Melbourne museum while Ed explored Fitzroy some more which is an interesting place with some nice bars and foodie places. The museum was interesting - interesting aboriginal exhibition, huge nature part (hopefully the only funnel web and redback spiders I'll see whilst here), upset to here afterwards that I missed a Neighbours exhibition as I ran out of time!
We tried out Kirsty's local for tea where there was a band playing so watched them for a bit, joined by Kirsty and Cassie later.
Friday 12 January
Ed headed into town, had a a gorgeous luncg and coffee in the smart Block Arcade and then bought a new T shirt as getting a bit sick of wearing the same old stuff! Looked around the South Yarra and Prahan areas which are quite affluent and full of people who love themselves, but it's an interesting place with some lovely houses. Looked around South Bank too. Lisa had a relaxing day but treated herself to her first haircut since leaving home! In the evening we stayed in at Kirtsy's that evening for a few drinks and had an interesting night trying on borrowed clothes and shoes for a big night out in Melbourne tomorrow.
Saturday 12 January
Ed went into the city and bought a whole new outfit for our evening out. Lisa spent the day with Kate (one of Kirsty's housemates) - we had a drive to Doncaster (feeling homesick!) and Boxhill, coffee with one of Kate's friends and walked a dog! In the evening we headed into Melbourne and met up with loads of Kirsty and Kate's friends. Given our attempt to look half decent we were then upset to find people in the bars wearing jeans and 'thongs' (of the footwear variety!). Eventually headed home at about 4am when the queue was too long to get into another bar!
Sunday 14 January
Both had a very lazy day. Went to an outdoor cinema in the evening with Kirsty and Michael. Great evening watching a film under the stars, watching the bats flying overhead and eating a fabulous picnic prepared by Kirsty and Michael....... shame the film was a rubbish French film with subtitles!
