Lisa and Simon`s Around the World Tour
Arrived safely in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, after a 6 hour train journey from Singapore. The fare was 10 quid - our cheapest day for months!
After a long time in the relatively safe environment of Australia, battling through KLs traffic on a white knuckle taxi ride and then on foot choking on the polluted air, dodging lunatic locals on scooters, and all the time declining street hawkers offers of food, drink, pirated dvds and fake clothing, just to reach our hotel was an experience in itself. It didnt half feel good to be travelling again though!
KL might be a world city (just) embracing industrialisation with both arms, but the living here is cheap when you come with sterling. Our hotel (no need for crummy hostels anymore) was slap bang in the middle of a bustling Chinatown and cost 14 pounds per night, slap up meals cost a couple of quid and taxis across town start at 50 pence.
We spent 4 days in KL and made the most of our time exploring Chinatown, Little India, the commercial heart of the city and briefly sampled the nations pastime - shopping - at one of the city's enormous malls that make Bluewater look like a cluster of village shops.
The big attraction for overseas visitors is of course the Petronas Towers, which until 2003 when Taiwan went a few feet higher, were the tallest buildings in the world. Unfortunately, visitors only get to go halfway up the 84 storey towers, but you do get to walk across the skybridge at that level that links the two towers. Seriously impressive stuff!
Being in KL was a great experience, even if we didnt manage to find Raquel. However, 4 days of pollution was more than enough, so we hopped on a bus for the Cameron Highlands, a five hour journey north.
Will add photos later.
