We got to the Argentinian border via a scenic 3.5 hour train journey to Villazon. We got our exit stamps then walked into Argentina where we were greeted with a long queue and a ridiculous bag inspection of every person entering the country. There was one guy wading through every single bag (including your dirty underwear) which took ages, lots of people missed their connection buses. When we got to the front a second guy started searching bags, he didn't even look through Lisa's bags (he opened it up and then just said "ok" after pretending to look inside), we thought what on earth is the point, as the thorough guy was wading through Ben's underwear!
After saying goodbye to Timo & Susan (after almost 2 weeks and a promise to meet up in New Zealand) and a further 7 hours on the bus to Salta, we arrived at midnight without anywhere to stay, We picked the first place in the book, called "Terra Oculta Youth Hostel" and vowed to check out first thing the next morning as the room wasn't the best and was a bit pricey. The next morning we realised the room was OK and blamed our snobbiness on tiredness! We spent the rest of the day wandering around Salta, which is a beautiful city with a very picturesque plaza. We noticed a huge difference between Argentina and Bolivia in terms of the facilities and infrastructure, we felt it was very similar to Italy. In the afternoon we satisfied our fascination with dead people by visiting some more mummies in the "Museo de Arqueologia de Alta Montana". There are 3 mummies in this museum, all children, which were found in the nearby Llullailaco volcano. The mummy we saw was of a little boy called "nino" and was exceptionally preserved with finger nails and eye lashes (it was as if he died yesterday, he was so well preserved).
After fulfilling our fascination (especially Lisa's) for dead people we left Salta the next afternoon heading towards Iguazu, we would have liked to stay in Salta for a few more days but sadly there was not enough time.
23 hours to go on the bus to Iguazu!!!
