Now feeling suicidal, we boarded a very kulakish bus at 6am and set off to Tupiza. As soon as we got on the bus, all we could smell was coca leaves. The journey was very interesting. About one hour in we got a flat tire, which was changed promptly. However, the road then seemed to end so we instead drove down an old river bed for about 7 hours. We pulled into a hideous town that was not our destination, where the bus stopped for 2 hours. For absolutely no reason. Eventually we set off again down the old river bed and arrived at Tupiza.
The town was set in the middle of a very arid landscape, like in a cowboy film. The dust from the streets went in our throats and eyes. We checked into our hotel, which was actually OK and had cable TV in the lounge. We also used the kitchen to cook a meal (our first in ages).
We had planned to do a "triathlon" trip around the town, which involved horse riding, jeeping and mountain biking all in one day around the weird landscape. However we were too depressed and the lure of Argentina was too strong, so we instead booked ourselves on a 4am bus to leave the following morning. Don't judge us too harshly, Bolivia has been like Chinese water torture (replace water with stupidity in this case).

Final thoughts: Surprised we are still alive
