We actually slept the whole night - I fell asleep while Alan was reviewing the pictures of the day -and thatwas 9pm! Another 6.45am wake up call and whilst the anchor dropping at 6am had woken Alan, Sienaand me, Finn and Derry were still well out of it - but at last we seem to be on Ecuadorian time!
We set off for James (Santiago) Island at 8am and landed on the black sand beach then set off on another walk. This was a walk of rock pools through the lava rocks (this time you could see where the lava had bubbled then solidified). Guess what we saw - yes more marine iguanas! There was also a big green turtle swimming in one of the pools. Shortly afterwards we spotted Charles Darwin's toilet- where water shoots up and down a blow hole shaped like a loo, and it looks like a flush! There was some speculation from our New York Friends, also in the Frigates group, about whether it would go down clockwise, anticlockwise or straight ! This was the sunniest walk we have done so far-but the pace is so slow that the kids do get a little bored. Finn hangs on Margoth's every word (soaking up all the information) and is often up at the front of the group - while Derry is ahead of the group on her own mission.
Back at the beach, Siena headed off back to the ship on her own - she looked so grown up getting on the zodiac with the adults, while Derry played in the water and Finn went snorkelling with Margoth. When Alan and I met up with themout in the bay they had seen white tipped shark, sea lions, turtles, sardines, a ray and Finn could name a fair few of the other fish we saw - parrot fish and yellow finned bluetail?
Back for lunch where Dez had her now staple lunch of a plate full of rice with lettuce whilst wearing a baseball cap over a swimming hat!!! The ship moved on during lunch and once we had stopped the boys and Derry went deep water snorkelling.
This was a little disappointing, since we had been tempted by the possibilities of hammerhead sharks, rays, turtles. So what did we get? Loads of danios, big shoals of small fish and plankton! We saw one shark but it was deep and hard to see - but we did see a puffer fish and Finn saw some marine iguanas. So for all of that it was a good snorkel, and I was really impressed with Derry who had only learnt an hour earlier in the ship pool - which was a bit different from 10 metre deep real coral reef stuff!
Finn and Derry seem so happy being wet - coming back from the dive they went straight into the ship pool, whilst Suzanne went off on the afternoons hike. One too many for the kids who all sat it out. Siena chilled in a hammock.
Suzanne came back happy that she'd seen her prime target - the blue footed booby! Yes you can buy a t-shirt which says 'I love boobies!'
The evening was pretty much the same but this time with an outdoor barbeque, which was really nice - even if all a bit 'cruise!' it is a surreal experience, dining out on the back of a big ship by the pool watching the sunset. Luckily it was earlier than on previous evenings, so Derry was still awake enough to look over the side as the lights came on, to see sea lions chasing flying fish, a turtle and more, before she put herself to bed again !!
