Well I have finally arrived in Australia and so far I love it! I feel very comfortable here, like it's 'natural' for me to be here and I don't feel like a tourist. I possibly don't look like one either as I have now been asked for directions (from Aussies) twice and was able to give them.
Sydney is so easy to navigate, it would be very hard to get lost. The people are friendly and approachable and it's a very chilled, relaxed environment; no rushing about/stress fests like at home. There is so much to do that it's actually hard to decide what to do first.
I decided on going to the Harbour Bridge first (well it is the ultimate Aussie icon) and I'm delighted to have swapped the Runcorn bridge for this one!! lol. It's very majestic in the daylight and beautiful at night. I've always wanted to climb it, however, after getting up close and actually seeing the height of it (and the people who were climbing at the time looked like grey dots) i've, ahem, decided to leave that for now ;o). Got some good photos of the bridge and the opera house which is so lovely and on the way back from this, encountered Aboriginies playing the diggeridoo, really good. I also happened to walk past Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman and the rest of the case of Australia who were having photos againt the backdrop of the opera house. Nicole Kidman is extremely skinny and tall!
I've also been to the local wildlife centre to see all the Aussie wildlife. Everything seems to bounce! The kangaroos were very laid back and also went through a butterfly rainforest where the butterflies fly all around you and will land on you. Of course, the koala photo had to be taken. I was a bit gutted that I couldn't hold one, but they choose one koala per day to do the 'cuddle' shots and this particular koala, Gan, was at the top of his tree having a kip, so no could do. But hey, can always go back.
Also paid a visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens which are very lovely, similiar to Kew but not as big. They also have an addition you won't find in London though - bats are hanging from the trees and some fly around in the daylight. I kid you not.
I just happened to be chilling out at Darling Harbour today, as you do, when someone I met in Europe (who is a New Zealander) just happened to walk past me. Not sure who was more surprised?! Just goes to show that you never know who is around the corner.
So far the weather has been surprisingly cloudy and rainy - I was quite shocked to see Aussies with umbrellas! However, I have still got a little bit burned...
Everyone I have met so far has been lovely and I think i've made a good couple of friends already. :o)
I have so much more to do and see, oh it's such a hard life. Keep tuned in folks!
