Hey everyone! I have finally made it to Antwerp, Belgium where I am studying abroad for the semester. A lot of people have asked me for updates and stories, so I am just going to put it all in a central place so everyone can hear about it.
I am still jet lagging, but loving it here already. We have been really busy learning the layout of the city and some Flemish which is the language most people speak here so I have been pretty busy. Getting here was absolutely insane though. Its definitely a story worth telling, even though it wasnt very fun.
I was supposed to fly out of Dulles Airport on Wednesday at 6pm. There was a pretty big snow and ice storm Wednesday in Northern Virginia. They kept delaying the flight then at around 9pm they cancelled the flight. We got rebooked onto the next flight, which was at 6pm the next day. There were 10 of us from JMU from my program there, so we decided to book a hotel room and just stay there for the night. We left the gate and went downstairs to get a taxi to the hotel, and the taxi line was literally a thousand people long. None of the taxis, airport shuttles, or car services were running, so we were stranded.
We couldnt get back in our gate since our flight was the next day, so we had to sleep on the airport floor. They gave us some blankets and we camped out in a corner. We stayed there until 530AM, which is when taxis were finally able to leave. We took a taxi to one of the girls' house where we slept on couches and her mom made us a pancake breakfast before we headed back to the airport the next day. Our flight left an hour late the next day, but we made it to Brussels the next morning. One of my bags got left in DC, but I got it back the next morning. After all of that, we were just really excited to be there and were still happy.
Like I said before, so far we have been exploring the city and University of Antwerp and how things work here. We also learned how to go food shopping in the supermarket. We went out to dinner and to a bar a lot of students go to, which was pretty fun. Tommorrow we are heading to Bruges for the day, so I will post pictures and update about that too
