Lin & Phil - Out and About in the Big World...
Cotinued form previuos journal...
next day we got up at 3.30 o go to Tigre Hill - the sunise viewpoint for Katchenjunga mountain, the 3rd highest in the world. Suprise surprise we were the first to arrive. Having hung around for 1/2 an hour at 8500 feet we were frezing our nipples off! Unfortunately it wsa a wee bit foggy so couldnt see too much of the mountain so we went straight back to Darjeeling to see the highest zoo in the world! Saw a huge black Tietan bear who certainly wsant camera shy, he lied only 6 feet from us (seperated by a ditch) munching on some banannas. We also went to the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute where all the original tents, breathing apparatus and other equipment from the 1st succesful everest climb is kept - quite an interesting place.
Last night we went to Joeys pub where we met a couple of locals, one man who lives in Bhutan and Darjeeling and is related to the Royal family of Bhutan, has had dinner with Prince Charles, has had his guitar signed by Mick Jagger, owns a fruit exporting business in Bhutan and has busked in New York and seemed to be a little spaced out! Anyway whilst in the pub we talked to this other guy who was a tour guide and mountaineerist, he told us loads of useful stuff and said he was waiting for Jamling Tenzing whose climber mount Everest many times and is the son of the 1st man to climb mount Everest - Tenzing Norgay - to discuss a trip to the summit with him. Then Jamling came in and everyone in the bar started muttering - he's quite famous round these parts.
Right got to go for some Dinner.
