Travel with Jen and Kate!
day 1:
We met up with our jeep group (3 french people and 1 fellow Brit), tour guide and cook and set off on our 4 day drive. We stopped and saw many different land formations - amazing rock shapes, many lamas, several small communities (that until recently didnt have transport back to a city to gain supplies to walked the long distance. They now are able to get a lift to town once a week). We stayed the night in San Antonio de Lipez (extremely cold!!) where we saw amazing stars (never seen so many ever before) and even managed to see a shooting star!
day 2:
We had an early morning (up at 5) and saw ruins of old communtiy villages, many lagoons, flamingos and then had our lunch at the hot springs! the water was amazing, very different temperature from cold cold air! it made it very hard to get out. after lunch we saw more lagoons (very blue ones this time), desert landscapes and eventually the geisers (really interesting to see!). we spent a cold night in Huallajara singing along to Christophes guitar playing and enjoying some Bolivian wine for warmth!
day 3:
today we saw more flamingos and lagoons (including a spectacular red one), some weird rock shapes and many volcanoes (majority of the dormant, although one was thought to be active). we arrived early to our accomadation for the night (Hotel de Sal) which had beds made out of the salt, and was right on the edge of the salt flats. we spent a few hours wandering around them in the afternoon, trying not to get too dazed by the vast whiteness of it all. we spent the night with beer and played cards till the electricity went out for the night!
day 4:
we were originally meant to get up at 5.45 to see the sunrise ovre the salt flats (apparently you can achieve a never ending shadow), but we weren't woken until 6.30. we appreciated the long lie! we drove onto the salt flats and across to a hill on them (where there were hundreds of really old cacti) and so got some amazing photos of whiteness. we spent the next few hours playing around with photos with Gemma (our fellow Brit) so we have photos of us holding cars and each other (we will try and put these up on here soon!!). this was the end of our tour. we drove to Uyuni where we dropped the others off (a very dreary little town that doesnt have uch going on in it!). we planned to get the jeep back to Tupazi except that it had run out of petrol, and the town wasnt expecting another delivery until the next day...if at all in the next few days! this didnt fill us with much hope as we had a bus to catch at 4 the next morning to Argentina. eventually though wilfred (our driver) managed to track down some fuel so we got to leave!! on the way back (7 hours) we stopped for some lama and rice (our lovely driver bought it for us), and then unfortunatly got a flat tyre in the dark on a hillside road. once this was resolved we made it back to Tupiza had some dinner and then slept for a short 4 hours before getting the bus to Argentina (where we had a very very cold and slow border crossing).
best spannish phrase form the 4 day tour: 'para aqui por la baño' (said on our way back to Tupiza!!)
