Hey everyone, I hope you are all well, just a quick update to let you know that I have arrived safely.
First stop Bangkok!!
It's quite mental chicken oriental here. Arrived Wednesday afternoon, and after an interesting taxi ride got to my hotel. I'm staying in Khao San which is the touristy part. It's just one long road full of stalls, restaurants and entertainment, not forgetting the McDonalds, Burger King, Subway and Starbucks at the end of it!!!
On my first day I decided to do a bit of sightseeing and go and visit the Grand Palace, I decided to walk as I feel that the taxis just try and rip you off and I would get completely lost on the bus system. With pop up map in hand, not looking at all like a tourist I ventured out. I bumped into a French man called Ian who lives in London and we decided to go and see the sights together which was really nice. The temples are amazing! We went to about 5 and decided that was enough as they are all pretty similar. We then went to the Grand Palace, we were informed after we bought our ticket that it was closed as the King was home, there was still alot to see though and pleased we went. It is so so hot out here, Protocol people, thank you so much for that face towel you bought me, it has been invaluable, and I have rung it out many times.
On the way back we bumped into a girl called Amelia, she is from Washington DC, but lives in Queensland, she was having trouble crossing the road. It is very hit and miss if you make it across, 5 lanes of traffic, no green men and lunatic drivers, I just linger behind the old Thai women or young school children, they all seem to have nailed it. Anyway the three of us made it across the road finally, and I met up with Amelia for dinner and a few drinks which was nice. Unfortunately they were both leaving the next day - I don't think it was anything I said!!!
Friday I ventured out to Dusit Zoo, once again on foot which the locals thought was lunacy, I must admit after walking home 20 miles later in that heat, I did tend to agree with them. That was good there, however as one of the few westeners there that day (I think it must have been national school outing day), I seemed to be the main attraction, I felt like I should have been in a cage pacing the amount of children that took a photo of me - I hope they didn't mistake me for one of the animals.
Today is my last day in Bagkok, later I will be catching the overnight train to Chaing Mai, where I will be doing a 4 day trekking tour including walking through the forrests, visiting local tribes, white water rafting and elephant rides - how exciting!
I happened to walk out of the hotel at the correct time today as there was a street fair taking place, that was amazing. I have just had a fish massage as well, you put your feet into a large tank of fish that gently bite your feet and eat the dead skin. When you first put your feet in it really tickles, I sat there giggling and jumping about like a lunatic, but I soon got used to it, and now my feet feel lovely and soft, I was thinking about throwing my whole body in.
Right I must go now, will try and put some photos on here, can't garauntee it working but we'll give it a go.
Love to all!!
