Diann:
Since there was a snowstorm 2 days before our trip, we had trouble finding parking. We got stuck behind some little old lady who was driving very slow looking for a spot. We tried one spot, but I was afraid we'd get stuck, so we found one a few blocks away and walked to Rachel's Crepes. It was COLD!! As we crossed the street, that same little old lady looking for a spot almost ran us over. Weird.
We got a seat and ordered, we were starving! It took almost an hour to get our food, but the crepes were very good. The hash browns were just average, though. We walked back to the car and passed this really cool little art shop. We noted that we want to visit there sometime when it's open.
We jumped in the car and drove to Lancaster Arts Hotel, a brand new hotel they restored from an old tobacco warehouse. The lobby was sumptuous, with lots of sofas and chairs. Of course we tried every one. They have a small art display, which was nice, but Lancaster County - you know what we mean. Lots of laundry flapping in the wind on the side of the farmhouse, with boys on scooters wearing black hats. Typical. The chairs and sofas, however, were very cool and most comfortable!! Believe me, we would know - we are sofa and chair-testing experts!
We left the hotel and went to the North Museum, where Reptile Weekend was taking place. Ditto on the parking several blocks away, with freezing cold walk. There was a line, but since we are MEMBERS, we cruised right in and got our event tickets. The first event we saw was "The Beastmaster Bill Styer." He was very good. He had turtles and snakes and alligators and lizards and told us all about each of them. He was very entertaining. He had a 6-foot Burmese python!
After the show we went to the live animal room, where we saw more snakes, and a tarantula (?) and frogs and stuff. And screaming children. We checked out the astronomy section of the museum, and the fluorescent rock room, which was really neat. Lisa bought a cool magnetic bracelet in the gift shop.
It was soon time for the Pennsylvania Reptile Rap in the Planetarium. Oh, my. There were 2 people from Pennsylvania Fish & Wildlife. The first lady wasn't bad, she went very fast and was kind of interesting. However, the NEXT guy...
He droned on for an hour while showing a PowerPoint presentation. In the DARK. About every single rule and regulation that they have. And the forms you need to trap a wood snake. And what the permit looked like that you'll need to keep a box turtle. IT WAS SO BORING. At the beginning, there were about 100 people there. We stayed until the bitter end, and by that time, we were two of about ten people left. Everyone else got up in the middle and left. I wish we would have done the same. But at least now we know how many red-eared sliders we are allowed to take from the wild.
After that, it was time to go. All in all, it was a VERY enjoyable day!!
Lisa:
The day started out when Diann picked me up. We got stuck behind this little old lady that was driving really, really slow. We tried this one parking spot but we were afraid we'd get stuck because of the on the ground. When we finally found a parking space what seemed like miles away, in the freezing cold, we had to walk up to Rachel's Cafe and Crepes. Right at the corner where the cafe was, the same little old lady almost ran us over. When we got there, we went right inside and sat down. We ordered and it took about an hour to get our food. I had a ham, egg and cheese crepe. It was very good. I was excited to try a crepe because I never tried one before.
We hopped in our car and cruised off to The Lancaster Arts Hotel. IWe got in and we were in heaven with all of the chairs and sofas. The art was nice too.
Then we went to the North Museum. It was reptile weekend. There was a big line but we were members so we could walk right in. We got our tickets and the first guy we saw was the Beastmaster Bill Styer. He was cool. He taught us about lizards, snakes, alligators, crocodiles and turtles. He had a huge snake! Then we went to the Live Room to check out some more reptiles. But to our surprise, there was tarantula but I'm not quite sure what that had to do with reptile weekend. But anyway, it was cool. Next we went to check out the astronomy section. That was interesting. Then we went to this flourescent rock room. I never knew there were glowing rocks.
We went to see our next show which was called The Reptile Rap. When it started there were about 100 people in there. The first lady that talked was alright. She went fast and she was more interesting. But the next guy, he was different. He was talking about all of these regulations and forms you had to take home and fill out so you could have a box turtle or endangered reptiles. Who cares about that? By the time the long and boring speech was over, there was only about 10-15 people left in the room.
Then we went to the gift shop. I found a magnetic bracelet that I bought. It is pretty!
It was a VERY fun day!!
