After leaving Dunedin where I wrote my last email, we headed south along the southern scenic highway. It was nice scenery with rolling hills, beautiful coastline and lots and lots of sheep. more sheep than we've ever seen in our lives and I'm from wales and Katie's from yorkshire. Actually, Katie was complaining that it was looking too much like yorkshire and saying things like 'where is all the amazing scenery you always go on about'. Mind you, she's been spoilt by the scenery i've shown her in and around Cardiff.
We free camped by some waterfalls that are supposed to be the most photographed waterfalls in New Zealand. I don't see why though, they were rubbish. Maybe New Zealand isn't famous for its waterfalls.
Then we went really far south and passed through Invercargill where I forgot how high our campervan was and scraped the top of the van under a street sign, damaging both our campervan roof and the street sign. But they probably won't inspect our campervan roof when we return it, hopefully. We wanted to buy another box of wine in Invercargill and we were in luck. That place seems to have liquor shops than Dunedin has steep streets. I read later on that alcohol was prohibited in Invercargill at some point in its past. Maybe that's why they have all the liquor shops. Or maybe it's because there isn't much else to do at the far south of the south island. Katie was asked to prove her age too.
We had lunch near a nice beach with a view of stewart island. I'd say the best scenery of the south coast of the south island are the beaches. Then Katie took over the driving and we went all the way to Te Anau in Fiordland. The scenery got more and more impressive as we went from the southern tip to Fiordland. The mountains in the distance got more pointy and the lakes got bigger. The road we were on became completely empty and we only saw other vehicles every few Kilometres. Even Katie was impressed.
Aidan.
