Paris - Day 2: Louvre, Invalides, Tour Eiffel, Arc de Triomphe, and Food
5Th Arrondissement Of Paris, France
This morning we enjoyed a delicious breakfast at our hotel. We had our choice of: croissant, baguettes, yogurt, fruit, jam, preserved fruit, fruit salad, ham, cheeses, meats, cereals, juices, milk, and coffee. There was a different breakfast lady, and she got very excited when a little baby came in. After breakfast, we bought one day passes for the metro, hoping to save our feet a bit today. Victoria chose the Louvre first, so we started there. We entered and found the line for the museum pass, which I was able to do in French.
There were so many beautiful works of art! The Louvre is immense, and it was crowded, but we enjoyed it. We wandered for a few hours, making sure to see the big ones. Toria's favorite was an angel statue, which I liked a lot too. Gabe's favorite was a guy spearing a lion. Dad's favorite is David's Coronation of Napoleon. Gabe bought a Minotaur and we got some magnets of our favorite pieces.
Apres le Louvre, we went towards Les Invalides and got some chicken, ham, and cheese crepes. We thought we'd never get Gabe out of there! There's a huge collection of arms and armor, and he loved it. We stopped in their café for a drink - café crème for Mama, a ginormous Leffe beer for Hedge, peach tea for Toria, and Cherry Coke for Gabe. After that pick me up, we went to the World Wars Museum, which was very interesting. Being in Europe, you get a real sense of the devastation caused by the two wars. We finished with Napoleon's tomb.
Next, we walked up Rue Cler towards the Eiffel Tower, and saw the quaint little French shops. There was a Mephisto shop, but we just browsed their offerings outside. We saw a salted caramel ice cream and all shared that, because we just couldn't resist. Toria got a cute jeweled Eiffel Tower from a boy in a shop. Then, we took about a million pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower. The lighting was really weird, so we did the best we could, then went in search of the Metro, which ended up being quite a trek.
We headed towards the Arc de Triomphe, and were very glad that we got to skip the long line with our museum pass, but our joy only lasted until about the 500th step up the spiral staircase! Gabe ran ahead of all of us, and we almost died by the time we reached the resting area. They trick you by breaking it up into a couple of separate stages, and you keep thinking you're finished, and then there are more stairs! The view is totally worth it when you get to the top, though! There's a tiny, rather nasty loo on the floor with the shop, and I bought a little charm in the shop.
We strolled down the Champs Elysees a bit, on the way to our metro stop, and thought about either going to Sacre Coeur while we had our unlimited travel pass today, or going to the Princess Diana memorial, but we were too tired. We had a couple of changes and big crowds on the metro, and stopped at our favorite restaurant for dinner, which was soooo good! Dad got Lasagna Bolognese, Toria got a pasta trio, and Gabe and I shared a Quatre Saisons pizza. We had some nice wine, and sat outside. Toria's dish came with gnocchi, spinach ravioli, and cherry tomato fettuccine. We all tried, and it was absolutely delicious! We are thinking of going back tomorrow. We skipped dessert there, since Toria wanted a sweet crepe, so we went to Rue Mouffetard, which is a pedestrian walkway down the street. I had just said I would walk as far as the eyeglasses sign, then they could chose something at the market down from the hotel, when we saw the creperie right by the glasses sign. Toria's dessert was saved! She got citron/sucre, and Gabe got nutella. They got to see the guy make them, unlike at lunch, because those guys were up in a cart. The guy was really funny, and posed for some pictures. He put about a cup of Nutella on Gabe's crepe! They were yummy, and we all nibbled as we walked back to our hotel.
It's nice having two bathrooms, as it cuts our evening shower time in half. One of the showers is really tiny, and it's nearly impossible to shave your legs in it. Unfortunately, we have no internet access tonight, so we went through our pictures and will post them later, with this. Tomorrow is our last day in Paris, and we're headed to Versailles! We're not sure what we'll do when we return, but we should be able to fit in one more quick thing, and maybe another meal at Pizza Cesar.
