We didn't get going until a bit later this morning after our late night. It was nearly 10am when we went to breakfast. We had a very different view to yesterday. There was fog so thick we couldn't see the golf course, let alone trees and mountains. However, when we were packing the car at 10.30am, it was almost clear, with a cloudless blue sky. It was a beautiful warm day. The first day we have had short sleeves all day.
We needed to do some washing and had seen a laundromat in Whitefield so we went down there.
Once we had clean clothes, we headed for Woodstock Vermont. The drive took about 2hrs and while there were some freeways, there were also roads passing through small towns. The colours were spectacular all around.
Once we had checked in in Woodstock, we walked into the village. It was only a 7 or 8 minute walk. It is a very cute village with stores and galleries. The Ottauquechee River runs through Woodstock & there is even a covered bridge in town. Our room overlooks the river which is lovely. As we had skipped lunch, we bought an ice cream & sat by the river for a while.
We went into Gillinghams General Store which was established in 1886 and sells everything from hardware to cheese to international wines to cow manure. There was even Vegemite on the shelf of spreads.
We found some picnic tables outside the library and sat in the sun for a while watching a squirrel in the grass. Very cute. We also walked across the road to the covered bridge. It was plain wood rather than painted red like some of the others. It wasn't as pretty.
Once the sun started to disappear, we went into Bentley's restaurant which is Woodstock's oldest eatery. We sat at the bar & had mojitos before moving to a table for dinner. Very nice!
Vermont is known for it's cheese so I am hoping to sample plenty over the next 4 days!
