We left about 8.30am this morning under grey skies. We decided to go to Rhode Island via Springfield, Massachusetts. We had to pass through Massachusetts anyway, so decided to stop and see the Dr Seuss Sculpture Garden. The drive took about 2hrs and we went up and over plenty of mountains. I assume it was still the Green Mountains in Vermont. We have crossed through 4 States today - Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts & Rhode Island.
We had a fair bit of rain once we hit Massachusetts. It definitely wasn't as pretty coming through these mountains because there were far less maple trees. It was mainly green trees.
The rain stopped while we were at the sculpture garden. There was Yertle the Turtle, the Grinch, Lorax, Thing 1 & Thing 2, Horton, Thidwick the Moose, a Sneetch, Cat in the Hat, Dr Seuss and a huge book - The Places You Will Go. Every sculpture was very detailed, especially Dr Seuss and the lounge chair he was sitting in. It was an excellent garden and was surrounded by the library and a few museums. We went into the Museum shop where they were selling some Dr Seuss merchandise. Robyn was very happy to find a t-shirt.
We got back on the road and found ourselves on a toll road. We decided to exit when we saw a Cracker Barrel as we were starving & a late lunch was in order. The toll was the huge sum of 80c. We discovered Cracker Barrel on a previous trip & were very happy to see some today. It is a place you can get some decent food - sandwiches, soups, salads - at very reasonable prices.
We had to get on the toll road again and this time the toll was 65c. I wish the M2's toll was that cheap!
We arrived in Providence about an hour later. We are staying in a lovely hotel right near the Financial District in town. Providence was founded in 1636 and is one of the oldest cities in the US. There are plenty of grand old buildings around us, including the State House which we can see out the window. We went for a walk this afternoon & found ourselves in the Arts District. There was also a university campus close by. I'm sure there will be plenty for us to explore tomorrow.
