We had a 4.5hr drive today and the first bit of it was retracing our steps back towards Montreal. Once we got off that road, we started to see more and more autumn colours - yellows, oranges and vibrant reds. So pretty sitting among the still green leaves. We also found mountains for the first time. We went up and down several but they weren't steep drives.
We saw a very unusual sight today. We passed a car pulling a trailer which had a moose head in it. We noticed the horns first before seeing the rest of the head. It was sitting on the 'neck' with the nose pointing up. We wondered whether the driver was the shooter, the taxidermist or the proud new owner.
We crossed the US border into Vermont before crossing into New Hampshire for the next 3 nights. We saw moose warning signs through Canada & the US - brake for moose, stay alert, risque - but never saw a moose, deer or bear. I know they mainly come out at night so there is hope yet.
We are staying at the Mountain View Grand Resort which is an enormous resort just outside the tiny town of Whitefield, population approx 1200. But, the resort is in the White Mountains and we have absolutely stunning views of the mountain ranges all around the hotel. There is also a farm on site. We were given a list of the day's activities when we checked in and found we can meet the animals & collect the eggs, participate in an axe throwing competition, have a private guided mountain bike tour, play board games in the parlour and do wine tasting. This afternoon we had hot cider and cookies in the lobby.
This is definitely a place for relaxing. We are going to explore some of the nearby small New Hampshire towns tomorrow and if it is clear, take an aerial tramway ride in the mountains. On Thursday night we are booked on an evening moose tour in a little town about 40mins away. Their record is 23 moose on one 3hr tour. We might even see our own moose on the way back!
