It was wet and windy again this morning in Providence. I tried to book our ferry tickets last night but had issues so I rang up this morning. The lady told me that because of the strong winds and rough seas, only the 9.10am ferry was confirmed to be sailing but to call back at noon.
We left the hotel and after a quick stop at Tiffany in the shopping mall, we headed for Hyannis, Massachusetts. It was only about 1.5hr drive. We had to stop and do some washing and I phoned the ferry people again and found our 3.10pm ferry would be sailing but was warned it would be rough.
We had decided to leave the car at the ferry terminal as it was $200 each way to take the car to Nantucket and people are discouraged to bring cars across. There is very limited parking right on the wharf but we found a car park opposite. There were attendants there so hopefully the car will be ok until Monday.
It had rained most of the way to Hyannis but had stopped by the time we had to line up on the wharf to board. But, the wind was cold.
We sat upstairs and had a good view of the beautiful houses along the shore. The trip was very bumpy. We were very glad it was only an hour. The lady at the car park had told us there was a big wedding on Nantucket this weekend. A lot of the wedding party/guests were on the boat. We saw the Vera Wang bags being carried off and heaps of flowers were on the luggage trolleys.
The ferry wharf on Nantucket is basically at the end of the street we are staying in. Although it was only a short walk, it was a bit tricky on the cobblestones with our suitcases. This hotel is in a lovely old house but is another hotel with no lift!
After settling in, we wandered back down Main St. Most of the shops were starting to close so we looked for a bar to have a drink. We were surprised that there weren't more eateries near the water but since looking at the maps & brochures, we can see there are plenty in other streets. We found a nice restaurant where we could have a drink at the bar first before moving to a table for dinner.
There is rain forecast for the next 2 days but hopefully it won't be too heavy. We decided to do a tour of the island tomorrow so we have booked that for 1pm tomorrow.
