When we first got to Rio we headed straight for Ipanema and Copacabana beaches despite the copious amounts of clouds and we just walked around taking it all in. The next day we decided to head to Corcovada to see Christ the Redeemer- It was such a funny trip we had a strange man taking us on the tour in a real banger and once to the top it was so cloudy that we could only just make out the shadow of Jesus Christ, nonetheless it was good fun. That evening we went for drinks in Ipanema with the twins that we made friends with at the airport. Day 3 we had a brilliant daytrip to Sugar Loaf Mountain ...the views of Rio were amazing and there were loads of little monkeys up there. That night 6 of us headed to Lapa, which is considered to be the cool place to go out at the moment. It was a great night..us little princesses had a bit of a culture shock as it was rammed with people but nonetheless very cool. On returning to the hostel i stubbed my toe badly on the step so at 5am me and JG were nursing a very poorly bloody toe. Day 4, Saturday, was the first day of proper sunshine so despite the previous nights drama we got up early and hit the rays. Sunday the b****** clouds returned but i nonetheless had one of my best days in Rio. We went to the hippie market where I bought a bracelet and necklace and in the evening I went to a football match at the Maracana with a girl from the hostel called Emma . I watched Vasco vs Fluminese and the atmosphere was amazing we sat right with the local Vasco supporters who set off all these fire torches and went mental. Monday was a bit of a disaster for me in the morning ...first off we moved to a cheaper hostel but being the security freak that i am i padlocked my daypack and the blooming lock got stuck so we had to find a locksmith who drilled it off, then i couldnt get any money out of any cashpoints in Rio but that`s sorted out now. The afternoon was a much greater success... we went on a tour of the favellas, which is literally translated as slum for the black people. It was so interesting it is completely lawless and unregulated: if the police or people from another favella enter they are shot ...there are young boys on the streets who are ganagstas with guns, and nobody who lives there pays for the electricity and water... they just steal it. The last day in Rio we went back to the beach to sunbathe for one last time. The beach is so interesting cos it is segregated- there is an area for the "beauties" "the gays" "the rich" "the poor" and then just great expanses that just are completely uncrowded, it is very strange and me and jayne are not quite sure which bit we were fitting into!!!!!! It was time for us to leave so Wednesday we set off on our first coach trip with out 21 kg backbacks to Ilha Grande.....
