So I've set off, after some great leaving dos and a ridiculous secret garden, I caught my Eurostar to Cologne via Brussels. There was only one tourist attraction I was told to check out in Cologne, the Kolner Dom, conveniently located directly outside the station. Architecturally it's pretty impressive, towering over the rest of Cologne. Cologne's a city moving at a comfortable pace, full of cobbled streets, bars and restaurants. The weather in Cologne was pretty miserable, which ruined my hopes of hitting the community-run beer garden - the real reason I visited...
I checked in at the hostel, it was a really nice place but the people in my room were either sleeping or kept to themselves so I went to the bar downstairs. Had some local brew - Gaffel - and asked where was good to grab a bite of typical German cuisine. They led me to a cafe around the corner called Voosh. I strolled over and went to order but the guy initially said they were closed. Once he realised I wasn't a local he said to take a seat and rustled up their most popular dish - currywurst! It's chunks of sausage, in a sauce, topped with curry powder. He went to the fridge and grabbed me a Gaffel. I asked how much I owed but they said not to worry. Chatting with Felix (the guy that owns the cafe, in the Celtic top) turned into a fast food lock in, fuelled by Gaffel. They kept topping up the brew and wouldn't accept my euros. They say they make a comfortable wage, and feed the money back into the community by giving free meals/beers to the unemployed folk (me included!). We branched out from the lock in at around midnight, hit a couple clubs and I ended up calling it a lot later than I should've.
Woke up at half 9, had a train to catch at half 10, and the station was 2.5km in an unfamiliar direction. So with a dry mouth and unconditioned hair, I ran to the station to catch my 5 hour train. I got to the platform to find three trains on it. After asking around, my train was anyone's guess. Luckily I stepped on the right one and was Berlin bound...
