One of the guys on the trans tour was travelling through Siberia to get to his new uni in Shanghai. So after I reached, we'd met and he took me over to his halls. The week I was in Shanghai was a national holiday in China so everyone gets the week off and it's madness! All prices are ramped up and hostels were rolling out on Centre Parcs prices! So I stayed in his halls. He was actually off to Inner Mongolia for the week as it was his break too, but after he'd left I stayed with his roomie from Yokohama, Taro. The security to his halls saw my backpacking ways a mile off and asked where my student ID was. Carrying all my gear and sweating from my clammy 26 hour train ride I said I'd left it in my room... They were having none of it, until my pal found another ID I could use. I flashed this at them with the same level of confidence I'd had when using the bro's clipped passport to get a few brews, and to my surprise they let me through!
A chunk of my time in Shanghai was dedicated to replacing the stuff I'd lost in Chengdu. The jeans the monkeys had nicked and a watch I'd left in the temple. I also needed to invest in some warmer clothes for the chilly times to come in Japan/Korea. So I went over to Nanjing Road and got haggling. Checked out The Bund later on which was quite a sardine situation, but cool to see.
Though it was a pretty moist day I went to Yuyuan gardens the next day, and the camera broke down halfway through. So I missed a few snaps but spent the rest of the day looking for a cheap replacement, but my haggling skills were pretty exhausted by this point and every deal seemed a bit of a rip. Later, Taro and I grabbed the last supper, went to a bar for the final Tsingtao and I headed for the airport!
