Renee & Mum did their own mini boot camp this morning, and then Dad took Eamon & Renee down to the beach for their first use of the fishing rods since we left Sydney - unfortunately, they didn't get a bite, but they saw a few sea snakes!
The van park was great - nice big patches of green grass, people riding around on quad bikes, some whale bones perched on the rocks, a Vietnam Veterans memorial - really pleasant place to stay.
We left about 9.30 and stopped at Pardoo Roadhouse for petrol - not a nice place to stop - very unclean and only 1 petrol pump working but we needed it so had to hang around to fill up. Back on the road, and we were looking forward to checking our De Grey River which some other travellers had told us about - unfortunately, a fatality occurred near there last night, and we came across the salvage operation this morning. We passed about 100 road trains today - more than any other day. The road into Port Hedland was interesting, with a railway line coming into view and we crossed it a couple of times on the way in and the longest train ever was moving on it! The port operations gradually become obvious, and once we arrived at the BIG4 and unpacked, etc we couldn't wait to get out to see the place a bit.
We drove around the port area, and watched a ship get tugged out and another ship waiting to come in. We also saw the Rio Tinto Salt stockpile area - it looks just like snow - fantastic! Lots of 'big' stuff going on in this town including BHP Billiton's Iron Ore facility. Heaps of work vehicles, trucks, road trains, trains, everywhere. The view from our van too this evening is quite different- we look out to the port area, and the street lights are all amber like they often are in port areas.
