We departed Mt Gambier with one last look at the Blue Lake, for the start of the Great Ocean Road part of the trip. We crossed from SA into Victoria, and dropped into Portland for morning tea at Kopi on the Beach. Portland's is the oldest European settlement in the state and a significant shipping port. We ventured on to Port Fairy for a quick look at East Beach and stopped for quite a bit at Warrnambool for a fish & chip lunch.
As we neared Port Campbell, some of the features of the Great Ocean Road started to appear. Firstly, we stopped at the Bay of Martyrs lookout, which is within the Bay of Islands Coastal Park (between Peterborough & Warrnambool). Towering rock stacks loom out of the ocean just off shore from sheer limestone cliffs. Arches, islands and blowholes have been carved out of the soft cliffs by the wind and sea. Many ships have come to grief on the rocky coastline, earning it the title of the Shipwreck Coast.
Further down the road was the Grotto with wooden steps winding down the cliff face to the bottom, providing visibility of the sea beyond a pool - a very pretty place. Last stop for the day was London Arch (formerly London Bridge - the name was changed after 1990 when the 'bridge' collapsed leaving 2 people stranded - they were picked up by helicopter!)
We arrived and quickly setup camp then went for a wander. Mum and Dad had a beer in the 12 Rocks Beach Bar, as well as the Port Campbell Hotel before we all headed home for dinner and some time in the games room.
