Nervous Turkey!
The monks in Luang Prabang and other areas of the world have to rise early before the sun to receive alms (food) from the local community. They then return to the monastery to eat their only meal of the day. This is a big attraction for tourists but has recently become too much so. Today we were hoping to catch a glimpse of this special moment, without crowds of tourists spoiling the tradition. We were up bright and early and ready to leave our accommodation at 5am. We were not sure of the correct/respectful way to carry out the offering so we decided that we would just watch at a distance like we had read online. We ensured that we covered our shoulders and legs and were prepared not to take photographs. Walking up our street gave us this peaceful moment as we saw a line of monks silently wandering the kerb side in single file to receive food from the local people who sat on the path (lower than the monks) with a sash over one shoulder saying a prayer after offering. We faded into the darkness and watched the silent transaction.
We made the mistake of venturing further into the town as this was where we had read to watch. These were the offerings that we did not want to see. Tourists paying the street vendors for food and a mat to sit on. They did not have the correct clothing or know how to offer the food. People were also on the roads as the monks passed taking photos with a flash. We now understand why the travel guides are trying to put tourists off.
Tonight we decided to watch a film in one of the local bars. The Interview....what a film. A comedy about Seth Rogan trying to secure an interview with North Korea's dictator Kim Jong Un. It had the room in stitches.
