I am currently sitting on a train going from St. Austell in Cornwall to London! I am going to try to update this every time we travel, so that we don't forget any part of our trip and can remember what the pictures we took are of. After sleeping for around 12 hours, Brian made us a "real English breakfast" that consisted of eggs sunnyside up, bacon (it looked more like ham because it wasn't in small strips), sausage, mushrooms, baked beans, tomatoes, black pudding (looked like a black biscuit) and of course some tea :)
After leaving Brian's cottage, we drove over to Falmouth which is a bit of a bigger city on the South Coast. It was very cute and has one of the deepest ports. A recent movie with Brad Pitt was actually filmed there. The roads here are so narrow and winding, yet people drive SO fast. Roundabouts are a really big thing here too, and are kind of used in replacement of stoplights. There was a hugeee ship that probably brought cars in to the port. And lots and lots of sailboats! After Falmouth, we drove over to Charlestown, yet another small cute and quaint town. The Black Pearl from POTC is actually docked there and the movies were filmed there; I can see why because its absolutely gorgeous. After Charlestown, Brian drove us over to Fowey where we parked and got to walk around the tiny little town. It had a port and you had to walk down some really winding, narrow roads to get down to the water. When cars drove by, you had to move over in order to make room for the cars to get by. It was all SO PRETTY. With the water and buildings that are hundreds of years old, it's a place I could go to and never leave. Brian and Becky wanted us to experience cream tea, as well as scones with jam and butter cream. There was a big debate between Denton and Cornwall about whether the scones taste better with the jam on top of the butter cream or the opposite. I couldn't really taste much difference, all I know is that it was so yummy! Scones for them are basically our version of biscuits, but a little bit different. I would not mind scones with butter cream and jam becoming popular in the States...I felt super European having tea and scones in a local place called The Well House Tea Rooms.
We walked around a bit more, got some fudge and walked into a very pretty old church and then trekked back up to the car. Our train left from St. Austell so we went and bought our tickets at the train station and then had some time to kill so Brian drove around until we came upon the St. Austell Brewery, which is where all the beers that we have had on the trip so far come from. After browsing around the visitors center we went up to the bar and each got a beer. This time I got a Korev which is a much lighter beer compared to the other ones I've had here. When it was almost time for our train, Brian drove us over and dropped us off. He was an amazing host and more than generous in every way. I definitely think we saw a side of England that we would have not experienced had we not stayed with him. I think we got a true taste of what it would be like to live in England and were able to experience the lifestyle here. Becky was a great hostess as well and it was awesome having a local Cornwall resident to ask questions about anything having to do with Europe. I know all of the places we are going will each be a unique experience in their own way, but Cornwall will be a tough one to beat!
Once we got to London, we arrived in Paddington station and had our first experience with the tube! We rode to Victoria station and proceeded to get very lost for a substantial amount of time. Wandered in the complete opposite direction for about 30 minutes and then finally headed in the right direction and arrived at our hostel! We checked in and were obnoxious getting into our room late. Woops. After climbing into our three tier bunk bed we passed out.
