Some crazy ups and downs today both physically and emotionally. Spent 2 hours this morning trying to sort out hostels... Not as easy as it would seem a day before bank holiday weekend... Eventually got the bikes out at about 11 to find that Tom's free hub had all but fallen to bits. Almost got to the first bike shop on route before it totally blew up. Oh and had to battle along the A650 all the way to Bradford in the meantime. A chilling experience that i never want to repeat again.
However our fortunes started to pick ip after Tom got a new back wheel from the lovely guys at ellis briggs cycles, fitted free of charge and on the spot after hearing we were doing LEJOG. Unfortunately it was a Raleigh wheel with at least a gazillion spokes and weighing in at about 7 billion tonnes but beggars can't be choosers!
So at 3pm with a good 50 miles to go our day started properly. The Dales are gorgeous. The climbing was good and was topped off by a nice 350m climb to finish. The 5km from the top to the hostel were then done in about 3 mins reaching a new personal best top speed of 48.3mph. All smiles. Wind chill must have been about -30 during the decent. At that point the quote of the day came out...
Tom... "I've just nearly been sick three times, I'm just too cold and excited."
