On Saturday, Peace and John, two of our dedicated SNAP Committee members travelled to Jirapa to meet with Imelda. Imelda works at Jirapa hospital in the physiotherapy unit, she runs the Jirapa group for disabled children, supported by ATE and knows all the back-stories of all the disabled children in the group by heart.
Peace and John came back brimming with ideas on how to improve the running of SNAP in Lawra. Ideas, particularly in terms of registration, induction of new members, and improved planning and marketing of the monthly meetings, and enjoyed the opportunity to discuss shared challenges.
On Sunday, we held a community meeting in Dowine to raise awareness of the SNAP programme and to discuss the possibility of starting a new SNAP group in the village to serve the surrounding communities which located so far from town.
The meeting was well attended by community members and community leaders alike. Against the gentle, rippling popping sound of dozens of groundnuts being cracked per second by groups of women sitting in the shade of the market's trees, Habib introduced ATE's programmes and the support we are already delivering in the community. One man with a few too many calabashes of locally brewed pito in his system, and a blaring radio slung round his neck, wobbled and swayed on the outskirts of the gathered circle who were listening intently to the message being delivered.
ATE Project Assistant, Edith and SNAP member, Peace, talked about the benefits of SNAP and community members posed questions and made approvals for the SNAP programme to come to Dowine. A further word of welcome, recommendation and the closing prayer, was delivered John Bosco, Headteacher of Dowine JHS which benefits from the ATE school feeding programme.
A great turn-out and a positive step towards reaching more disabled children in those harder to reach areas within Lawra District. We'll keep you posted on developments to come.
