We have had one week in Hong Kong and it is one week we will never forget! Hong Kong is a beautiful city and the people here are so nice. We never had Hong Kong on our original itinerary and just decided to go there on a spur of the moment and we are so glad we did!
From getting off the plane everything was going so well. We collected our bags with ease, cruised through immigration with no queues and got a 2 quid 35 minute coach ride into the city centre. Everything seemed to be going too well! And thats when disaster struck! We got to our hostel that we had booked for eight nights to be told there was no room available for us! Oh dear here we were stuck in the middle of Hong Kong with 2 ruck sacks at 10pm at night with no bed! Great! In the end the hostel helped us find alternative accomadation (out of guilt probably!) that was pretty much two beds in a cupboard! But it did have a bathroom...well I say bathroom, it was a shower cubicle with a sink and a toilet in! Too be fair apartments, hostels, guesthouses etc are all the same in Hong Kong, absolutely tiny, but seeing as though we we're here for 8 nights we thought it would be best to find somthing a bit bigger than a rabbit hutch. We managed to find a hotel from a last minute deal so we were happy with that!
On one of the first nights here we went to the world famous Happy Valley racecourse to place a few bets, it was a great evening and the atmosphere was superb. The racecourse holds 54,000 people which is just a bit bigger than Redcar races!! Lynz had one winner while it just wasn't my night...mind you don't often win when you bet on a horse with a funny name!
We visited a few of the many markets that Hong Kong has to offer and it was fun bartering and we found ourselves a few bargains. Temple Street night market is one we've heard of before, you could spend hours and hours there looking in all the different stalls. No matter what time of day or night it is, the streets of Hong Kong are constantly full of people, its like walking through Times Square but everywhere! On a night time that is when Hong Kong really comes to life and the city lights just look amazing.
We went to the number one tourist attraction, Victoria Peak to see stunning views of the city and the harbour. We went up a very steep hill by a tram in the late afternoon so we got to see Hong Kong in the day and the night and in our opinion it looks a lot prettier at night! Up there is many restaurants (and gift shops obviously!) and bars and we went to Bubba Gumps restaurant (the Forest Gump restaurant we went to in LA) and had a lovely meal overlooking the city lights. It was gorgeous but we didn't want to eat too fast as we were enjoying the view so much!
Another way to see how amazing Hong Kong is at night is to watch the Symphony of lights show. At 8pm every night the city skyline comes to life with lights and lasers beaming from the roofs of the builings dancing to the music. It looks amazing, but I wonder just how much the electricity bill is!!
Every book we have read about Hong Kong says you must try a dim sum meal while you are here. It is traditional Cantonese food but instead of ordering a meal off the menu you order small dishes to share and they bring the food over as and when it is ready. Apart from the experience, the food is absolutely gorgeous and believe me tasting Chinese food here is alot nicer than from the local take away!
On our last day I went to go and see the giant buddah statue called the Tian Tan Buddah. It was located in a little village and it was nice to get away from the city for a few hours and experience a part of Hong Kong that was less hussle and bussle! The Buddah was pretty impressive and if you want to know a useless fact, it is the largest seated outdoor buddah! Now hows that for you!!
We had a superb time in Hong Kong and we would both love to come back here one day and do it all over again!
