We landed at Dulles Airport late on the 1st night. We were going to get the shuttle bus to our hostel but after a poor attempt of trying to find out where to catch it from we opted for a taxi instead. It turned out our hostel was about 30 miles from the airport so it was prob a good job we got a taxi as otherwise we prob wud of got lost!
We finally arrived at the hostel. We stayed at the HI Washington DC Hostel on 11th Street. The hostel was really nice, clean and everyone was friendly. Hostel was in walking distance from all the major attractions.
We dumped our bags in the room and went for a walk into Washington. We went through China Town then found this pub which looked ok, so we stayed in there for a while and had a few beers then called it a night.
Next day we got up early and it was a gorgeous day, which we didn't expect. We did all the tourist sights. Went to the Jefferson Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, National Holocaust Memorial Museum, National WWII Memorial, the SW Waterfront (Lake Potomac), Vietnam Memorial, Washington Monument, WWI Memorial and the White House. Whilst we were near the White House as well the Americans were saying they thought George Bush was coming in today, then soon after, 2 military helicopters were above our head and one of them landed in the White House, so we presumed that was him!!
In the evening we went to watch the Washington Capitals vs Boston Bruins at Ice Hockey at the Verizon Center. None of us boys particularly like or watch Ice Hockey but it was absolutely class!! The Capitals won 10-2 which I think was an upset as Boston were above them. When they score the whole crowd goes mad!! Buzzers go off, everyone stands up an claps and screams, it was well funny! On the big screen in the middle something comes on as well and one time when they scored Frank the Tank (Old School) came on when he is at the party smashed doing his robot dance, we were in stitches! The atmosphere is quality all game. During breaks etc they have things like smile cam, dance cam and fan of the game where they go round the crown and they appear on the big screen and have gotta smile, dance etc and you win free food and tickets an stuff!
Next day we didn't do anything as we had to catch our bus to New York. So all in all, Washington was class. Although we weren't there for long, we still had time to do everything we wanted. Highlight was definitely the ice hockey match!!
