Just thought you might like to know that my total number of beds stayed in count is now up to 18! I've also done 7 trains and stayed in 10 different hostels! Just a little fact of the day :)
It's beautiful weather here in Guangzhou again today and I actually feel like I'm on holiday, it's about 28 degrees at highest and our hostel is overlooking a huge river with the city ( that's bigger than hong kong ) the other side, if that were the sea instead I'd actually think that I'd magically turned up in Spain or tenerife for a few days!
Guangzhou was initially just a one day stop off on our way to hong kong as it was cheaper to do it that way but after the 19 hour train and being welcomed by the brilliant sun for the first time in weeks we decided to stay for 2 nights, get a bit of chill time and see the city.
Yesterday was spent sorting our HK train tickets out, updating blogs and doing washing (all the stuff I've been pitting off doing) but with that sorted we we're free to explore the city for the day!
After a short wander last night through dodgy backstreet night markets roads, and getting food we sat in the riverside bar for a couple of hours watching a singer in the warm, got a 4 litre vat of tiger beer for az and I and got the down time we much needed! Got an early ish start this morning and a small ferry over to the main city for 5p, although its not a particularly well known place, Guangzhou is still huge though not as developed as most cities and still a bit rough around the edges. In recent years the Asian games have adopted the city as their place of play so it's really starting to take off and tourism is slowly picking up, even still, we had the stares and laughs and didn't see a single other foreigner for the whole day and after just coming from shanghai where it's western central it was s bit of a reality check, we're deep in china again!
The centre of the city where we spent most of the day is unbelievably busy, there's just miles of roads with shops stalls and restaurants lining either side, a big square in the middle and loads of high rise accommodation. Markets are plentiful and trawlers and lorries are constantly coming in bringing fresh fish and sea food to be sold on the street and in markets and you can buy what ever you fancy, all still alive, and take it into the small local restaurants where they will cook it for you! It was boiling hot all day there's always so
much to look at, We found ourselves going in and out of shops and jade markets all day having banter with the staff and browsing the fake goods. We're off to find some dinner shortly and try what the Guandong province has to offer, it's of Cantonese influence
and I'm told pretty similar to 'english' Chinese as i know it so roll on the sweet and sour chicken balls and chicken chow mein! Haha (I'll be complaining if don't get a little polystyrene cup of sauce on the side by the way...)
Hong kong next which I'm very excited for, just a 2 hour train takes us over the border tomorrow and hopefully the weather will be pretty similar!
