Well I got the cooking class organised! My first choice was fully booked but the second one I tried had availability and I'm very happy it did! One of the highlights of northern Thailand! Benny's home cook school was great! Picked up in the morning and met my fellow chefs for the day and then went for a tour round a local market before heading to Benny's home where her cook school is based. So nice to get out of the city again and the view over the massive paddy field was brilliant!
A lot of the ingredients we needed was grown in Benny's garden, which her mum looked after, and we picked what we needed for the days recipes.
It was a great day with great people and fantastic food! 5 courses over the day with plenty breaks and such a chilled out atmosphere was perfect especially with the heat. I'll be attempting a few when I get home so I hope Mam n Granny are ready for a Thai night!
My next stop was Sukhothai which used to be the capital of Thailand many moons ago. The historical park there is very well kept and I hired a bike to cycle round and see the ruins. It has the feel of a better preserved Angkor with the same style of chedis and lots of Buddha's of course. It was nice to have some of them to yourself though, which was a bit surprising but I think it's more about timing it to avoid the hoards of Chinese tour groups that are everywhere.
Ayutthaya was my next and last stop in Thailand. It's another old capital and many people do a day trip here from Bangkok. It also has a historical park but with less well preserved temples though some are still impressive. There is the famous Buddha in a tree at the most popular Wat but there's a lot to visit if you have the time.
I did a tour in a tuk-tuk which although it was an expense I wasn't banking on it did take me to things I probably wouldn't have seen otherwise. It's so hot and humid here right now though, it doesn't make for a pleasant experience doing anything outside. Even just sitting doing nothing you feel like your eyes are melting. Never appreciated air-con so much!
That evening my hostel buddies and i went on the boat tour round to another three temples. It was nice to see the city from a different perspective and see the local kids playing in the river and fishermen giving us a wave on the way past.
Tomorrow I head to the airport and to Cambodia where I am so excited to be meeting up with Cat and Stu!! Cannot wait to see them and hear all their stories from the months and months of their travels!!
