Hola from San Sebastian
After a mission train wise we finally arrived from Paris in San Sebastian early evening on Tuesday. I won’t bore you with the details but suffice to say that apparently a car collided with a train causing tracks to be closed and us to be diverted to other stations. We were extremely pleased to finally arrive and after Paris to sun and warmth.
We are staying in what’s called the old quarter with narrow cobblestoned streets and alleyways full of shops, bars & restaurants. After settling in to our Pensione Edorata we were soon sitting in the sun in short sleeves drinking beer and eating Pintxos which are small tapas on toothpicks. When finished you pay as per how many toothpicks you have! Squid rings, cheese balls, olives, prawns – delicioso!! We also had other pintxos that we could neither pronounce nor eat!!
The next morning you wouldn’t believe it (Fay & Deb!!) we woke to Rain! OMG so……..just got drenched everywhere we went but it certainly didn’t stop us from the shops. Today has been NO rain!!Thank goodness - so we made up for yesterday & have done heaps of walking. San Sebastian is shaped like a horseshoe with large hills at either end with two beautiful beaches in between. We are close to Mount Urgull which has a castle & large Jesus atop it so we climbed up there this morning which was a big test to my fitness! Then got to Mount Igueldo at the other end and rode a cable car similar to Wellington’s one up to the top for fantastic views over the city. We walked back from there along the water boardwalk which took about 40mins – sunny but invigoratingly windy.
This is my first time to Spain so it has been a lovely introduction. A nice lively buzzy quaint little town. Siesta time happens here at 1pm till 4pm so that feels a bit strange where it's just lots of tourists wandering around.
Also, smoking is everywhere here – after New York and Paris where the laws are the same as ours it’s like going back in time and a bit weird where you can still smoke in the cafes and restaurants.
And compared to Paris where so much English was spoken it has been a shock that so little is spoken here. Thank goodness Amy is better with her Spanish than I was with my French!
Off to Madrid on Saturday so hasta la vista xxx
