Sunday March 7th---Day Three
Talk about an early rise.Today our guides woke us up at 5am.No big deal.We needed to get up early in order to cover the 150km drive North to Monkey Mia in time to watch the dolphins come in for food.We watched the dolphins swim ashore and had a great marine ranger explain dolphin behaviour, misconceptions and other facts about the Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphins. The dolphins that are fed are all direct descendents from the original dolphins that first came into Monkey Mia to be fed.The management technique in the bay ensures that other dolphins don't become dependent and rely on the dolphin feedings times.I found this pretty cool considering a bunch of dolphins came in, but only a few are actually fed.The guide also told us how not all dolphins travel in pods as they enjoy socializing and actually spend about 30% of their day doing just that! The feeding lasted about an hour and we were then given free time to hang out on the beach and wander around the resort.Lucy and I decided to sit by the beach at a café and enjoy a snack while catching up on journaling and postcards. The café was awesome!I had a couple pieces of date and pecan bread with yogurt. Mmmmm. After about 3 hours we hit the road again and continued North to Denham. Here we stopped for lunch on the beach and a swim.I even made friends with a local Aussie... no worries it wasn't a cute surfer boy, it was a little Aussie-American girl named Rumour (pronounced Ruma). The group of us killed some time jumping off a floating platform before climbing aboard our beloved 4-wheel.After lunch we visited Shark Bay, a cliff-side view of lemon sharks, huge stingrays and some more lemon sharks.Back in the buses for a wee bit longer and then we were exploring Shell Beach—a beach made entirely from shells! From here we attempted to head back to our campsite but we were halted pretty quickly. It turns out that one of the buses brakes were jammed on, so in typical Aussie fashion we decided to pile the extra 15 people into the 2 remaining buses and head back to camp.Luckily this was our last stop for the day anyways.Today was my bus driver's (Mark) last day, so we had a bit of a bus party for him… streamers and balloons included!Crazy Aussies... he was the one who went out and bought all the supplies! We got into our campsite around 6pm, just in time to check out the stromatolites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stromatolites) and the awesome sunset. We ate dinner around 8pm and it was delicious!Who knew I would have my favourite meal (Stir-fried chicken) in a bush camp in the middle of nowhere!?The rest of the night involved drinks, karaoke, saying goodbye to Mark and watching the stars.
