November 11th 2010 --- Mojo Surf Camp at Spot X
Early, early start! We were up at 6:15am, dressed, eaten and in our wetties ready for our first theory/surf lesson by 7am!We learned a few theoretical things about surfing like wave formation, the surfer's code, etc. before hitting the beach where we went over techniques and stance. We then had about an hour and a bit out riding the waves. This location was much easier to surf than Surfers Paradise where I did a surf lesson 4 years ago.The waves were super long, perfect for learning on because not too many dumped early, therefore only sending you into a nosedive occasionally!I struggled to stand up in Byron (only standing twice for split seconds), but here I actually rode waves! One time I even carved on purpose, as opposed to the wave just sending me in its direction!
We were scheduled to do our second surf lesson at 9am, but that would mean we would be surfing for 4 hours straight, and trust me it's tiring stuff!Instead, we re-scheduled to the 2pm surf lesson with some pros that has been staying at the camp, surfing multiple times a day for the last 2 or 3 days.(Don't get too excited, they were learners just like Al and I a few days ago!)The afternoon was crappy weather, with a constant drizzle lingering.A perfect day for surfing.. literally! The water was nice and warm and you were wet anyways... so I didn't mind the rain! The waves even picked up later in the day, so we had a more challenging surf the second session. The waves sure battered me around!I came out with rashes on my forearms and blisters on my hands from having to grip so hard to keep a hold of my board!Go big or go home I reckon!I'm only in Australia once--- errr twice!(Same thing!)
This evening we had another glorious meal and socialized with fellow surfers before catching our overnight Greyhound to Sydney. Our bus was supposed to pick us up at 12:25am, so we had one of the surf instructors drop us off at the Greyhound pick up area (which is just an unmarked pull over on the side of a major trucking route!)at 11:30pm.We waited in the dark for the overnight bus for what seemed like forever! The bus FINALLY rocked up an hour late!We didn't have the energy to question why it was so late; we just climbed aboard and tried to find a free seat on a packed bus. There wasn't room for Allie and I to sit together, so we sat beside a couple of strangers and tried our best to get some shut-eye.
