Day Two: Saturday May 22nd 2010
This morning the three of us ate at our hotel because we have complimentary buffet breakfasts for all four mornings while in Legian. The buffet was a mix of traditional Indonesian dishes such as rice (Nasi Goreng), noodles, guava, jackfruit and rice porridge, as well as western pancakes, waffles, hashbrowns and eggs made to order.
After breakfast, we ventured into the streets of Legian in search of some good deals.Street vendors here EXPECT you to barter with them.I have been told to automatically cut the price to a third or a quarter of the asking price.I'm definitely not the world's best bargainer and I almost feel unethical trying to barter with people who are so poverty stricken just so that I can get a dress or sarong that is already cheap for a few dollars less; but I play the game regardless.Today I picked up a batik sundress and some cute Frangipani (tropical flower for the non-enviro nerds…) hair clips.During our adventure down the main strip, we stumbled across a spa that was advertising fish foot spas where the fish nibble the dead skin off your feet.$5/20 minutes of nibbling… Shannon and I were definitely in!Where else in the world could I enjoy a spa experience with a pool of fish!?!What a hilarious (yes I laughed pretty much the whole time) experience!Apparently you can get a full body fish spa, but I'm not too sure who would want fish nibbling your entire body!
We eventually made our way back to the hotel for a swim before heading to a beachside restaurant for lunch. We spent the next few hours soaking up some sun (and drinks) by the poolside before cleaning up for dinner. We ate our first Balinese dinner at a really funky Indonesian restaurant along the beach. Our "table" rivaled the food!It was similar to eating on a bed with a raised table in the middle and tons of pillows!I had the best chicken satay I've ever had and some delicious drinks to go with it.We ended up staying for three hours enjoying some martinis and learning how to play backgammon. After dinner, we wandered back to the hotel and called it an early night because we were planning on meeting our new friend Wayan at 8:30am for an all day tour of Northern Bali.
