Saturday, We arrived in Shanghai around 19:00 and went straight to our hostel to get ready for our night out on the 'Drunken Dragon Bar Crawl'. We were advised that we were not allowed to wear our flip flops, all Laura had other than flip flops were sports trainers or hiking boots therefore went on a quick shopping spree with Jennifer to find some shoes, all we could find was bloody Marks and Spencers of all places! Laura could not justify spending £30 on shoes right now so ugly sports trainers it was!! We went out on our bar crawl around 21:00 to the first bar which was all you can drink for an hour, anything after that is either a blur or non memorable.
Sunday, everyone stayed in bed hungover except for Laura and Jen who were up and ready for the day! We met Evan at 10:30 for a day trip to Zhujiajiao, a small water town still in Shanghai but a couple of ours out the hustle and bustle of the city. After waiting in the sunshine for an hour then boarding the 2 hour bus, we realised we were in fact hungover so slept the whole journey. The town is really quaint and reminded Laura a lot of St Ives, we went on a little boat trip and Laura had a chance of steering the boat which was a novelty. The different smells of street food didn't really agree with our stomaches and lunch made them churn but we made it through whilst the others suffered in bed, Ben watched movies all day! When we got back we were absolutely hanging so just met everyone for dinner then went to bed.
Monday, we met Dexter and went on a walking tour of Shanghai, we went to a nice shopping area which had all traditional Chinese Market buildings but actually quiet westernised shopping now, we went back to the hostel for a rest and some lunch. After, he took us to the local park which on weekends is used as the 'Marriage Market' where grandparents come to try and match make their grandkids with others grandkids, very traditional. We walked to shopping street which is one of the world's largest shopping streets then took the MRT across to the financial area of the city with all the skyscrapers. Lots of people were still hanging from our night out and a lot of walking today so we chilled for the rest of the day.
Tuesday, we met Dexter and he took us to a Propaganda Museum, an unusual museum, several rooms in an old mans basement with his collection of propoganda posters on the walls, 6,000 posters collected over the years 1913 through 1997. Some of the posters had English explanations on them which helped explain what they were about. It was interesting to see how the government had encouraged the people to support their causes with so many different posters, we particularly liked the ones which were used to make China look bigger and better than America and the UK. After, we walked to the river which had a great view of the financial area and all the skyscrapers, we walked along the river until we got to a fancy hotel which we went up and used the hot tub on the roof over looking the city. It was pretty funny having all 18 of us try to squeeze in this tiny hot tub, especially as it was freezing cold if any part of your body was not covered by the hot water! It was dark when they finally kicked us out the tub so the view of the city lit up was amazing, we walked back to the hostel and some headed out for a night of KTV (kareoke) whilst others were smart and went to bed as tomorrow we are up at 7:00 for our train to Fujian.
