We decided early on to break up our flight to the South Pacific with a layover in Hawaii and booked a room in an airport hotel with no expectation of leaving it until we flew out. But we got in early and thought maybe we could visit Pearl Harbor. Alas, we were not that early. Our next choice was Waikiki Beach; touristy, but what are we? After an 8 hr plane ride, we decided to hoof it, then realized it was 9 pm our time, so we caught a bus. That turned out to be an interesting choice, otherwise we never would have gotten a chance to see the locals and how they go about their daily business.
Buses in Honolulu are well-used. Their riders are courteous and helpful. And the buses of the capital of our Hawaiian paradise are filled with very young single mothers; ear-bud sporting, backpack toting, shabby Hawaiian shirt wearing homeless men; teenage girls with skate boards; and not so young but just out of the water surfers with their boogie boards in hand. Just look at the pix if you don't believe me.
