The chief reason for our visit to Fiji was the diving. We heard it was the best in the world and as far as we're concerned, it is. I was hoping some of our videos would give you a glimmer of what it was really like but I'm afraid uploading our videos is a bit of a problem, so you'll just have to wait till i get home to see them. Meanwhile, imagine the following:
Was that a puffer fish that skimmed by us or just a little reef shark? And several Angel fish. All are true. The coral was breathtaking, especially from a tank and regulator.
Two things made our dives especially noteworthy. They were all drift dives which means our dive boat dropped us off in the water where we drifted alongside a reef for 50 minutes or until our air was low at which time we surfaced and, magically, our boat was there to pick us up. The other notable feature was the absence of other divers at our sites which is perhaps why the coral is so pristine and beautiful. For those who like to dive, this is the ultimate.
Another item of interest: The owner of this island is intent on developing sustainable aquaculture. He raises tilapia in a small circular pool - more like a bin, and uses the fish droppings to fertilize his hydroponic vegetables whose water (from the fish pool after having been filtered) is then used to hydrate the veggies and returned to the fish. Among the veggies he's growing are lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, beans. So instead of a video from under water you have a photo of his apparatus.
