Lush Life
Hehehe, had a bonkers week!!!
We left Byron Bay for Brissie, which was completely boring (although it was a bank holiday Monday so the place was a ghost town). We wandered round the city, taking some piccies, then had an eventful hour trying to get to Susie and Peters (some friends of Nads) where we were stopping for the night. It was meant to be like a 10 minute drive out of Brisbane, but as we use our Lonely Planet as our map (histerical) we got a bit confused as not all of the street names are in there, and ended up driving about 45 minutes past their house, into the middle of no where! All a good laugh though! Eventually made it, and had pizza and wine, so it was worth the detour.
We literally used that as a stopover and headed off to Noosa the next morning, where we had a lovely camping spot under a tree full of bats! It was so annoying, they make the most screechy sound you've ever heard, and flap about all night. It was slightly amusing until we were getting peed on going in and out of the tent, and then they decided it would be a right laugh to pee and poo all over our tent, which meant that by the time we come to pack up, we had to scrub the tent with a washing-up liquid and a sponge before we could put it away cos it was covered in runny poo and really stunk. We also got woken up at 6.50 by the camp warden (cos we hadn't paid) but because of the state of our tent and car, we weren't giving them a penny, so at 6.50am we were cleaning the tent and proper hosing down the car to get a quick getaway before they came back for the money. Managed it, but at the time it wasn't exactly my idea of fun. Still, we've laughed about it ever since, and Noosa was lovely, and we got a good tan there, so it wasn't all bad. We also became expert fisherwomen at the campsite. It was so funny, we rocked up to this fishing spot where all the pro fishermen where, armed with our rod, bucket, knife, net etc etc, and pretended we knew what we were doing, which was all well and good til I caught a fish, and we were too scared to get it off the hook, cos it had gone through its eye!!! haha Well, actually, it wasn't that funny- poor fish! But these men helped, and then we had the fishing bug after Nads caught the smallest black cod you've seen in your life (about an inch long) and so we bought another rod, and now we have one each!
From Noosa we went to Hervey Bay, and met with Kel, yet another friend of a friend that Nads knows from back home, and she agreed to meet with us and show us the sites of Hervey Bay, which weren't much, so we decided that we'd all go on a fishing expedition with her brother and their boat. Me and Nads were extatic (this was the real thing) so we spent the afternoon out in the Pacific, with Kel and Gaz her brother, who were laughing their heads off at me and Nads, who claimed we knew exactly what we were doing. We had squid as bait, and where cutting it up ourselves and everything and then I thought i'd caught a rock (it was dead heavy), but it actually turned out to be a huge parrot fish. It was great. We weren't able to keep it though cos it was 31 cm and they have to be 35 to keep, so that was abit annoying, but still fun. We went back to theirs after fishing to find their dad had a huge bbq on the go. We were fed so well, we loved it.
The next morning was my birthday! Happy birthday to me!!! We'd booked an overnight trip to Fraser Island, the biggest sand island in the world. We had to get up at 6.30am to pack the tent away, and get ready for the trip....not exactly my idea of fun on my birthday, but it was worth it as the trip was amazing.
We got a ferry over to the island, where we had dolphins swimming alongside us, then once on the island you can only drive around in 4 by 4's cos of the sand, so we were on this huge 4 by 4 truck. We drove through rainforest, to the east side of the island where there is a 54 mile long stretch of beach. The beach serves as the islands main road, its bonkers, and you can't swim in the sea cos of sharks! We went to a fresh water creek though where we had a paddle, then went to get dinner in this lush resort. It was all dead fancy. Nads told them it was my birthday and they brought me out a cake and all sang happy birthday, it was great, but I went bright red, haha. After dinner we went to see coloured sand formations, that were yonks old, and also to a shipwreck that has been washed up onto shore. Its been there since 1935 and was a hospital boat during the war, that got caught in a cyclone and sunk, then got washed ashore. All very interesting. From there we drove right up the beach to a place called indian heads, where we stood over the edge of this huge cliff looking out for sharks (we did see some) and then went to these pools called champagne pools, cos the sea flows into them making them frothy. We then headed back to camp, where we had a bbq, and the tour guide Steve, bought me 6 cans of beer as a birthday pressie. How sweet was that. We'd already taken 6 with us, so naturally we ended up getting a bit drunk, cos we had twice the amount we were meant to have! hehe Tea was a barbie again, with steak, sausages, garlic bread etc (such a nice birthday tea), then I opened my birthday cards which I'd been saving for weeks-thanks mum, sisters and nanna pauline...then we were in bed ready to be up again the next morning at 6.30.
The following day we headed back down the island to 2 freshwater lakes. One was a green lake that could only be reached by walking half an hour over these sand dunes...it was so amazing, like being in the desert, our footprints where the first on it, it was really good, and the lake had catfish in it that swam right up to you. From that lake we went to one that was a blue water lake (has something to do with the types of sand/vegetation its by). They are formed from rain water, and are totally clear, they're beautiful. The blue lake also has the finest sand in the world, and you use it as an exfoliant, rubbing your body down with it, and it really did feel very very soft afterwards. You could also use it to clean jewellery, and some people cleaned their bracelets and stuff, and they came up gleaming! It was very impressive. From there we walked along a creek, and then headed home.
It was a fabulous trip, and a birthday that i'll never forget. I spent my 25th on Fraser Island! I don't even remember what I did for my birthday last year, but this one will always stick in my mind, everyone made an effort to make it special.
We returned to Hervey Bay, and Kel had said we could stay at hers, so we got back to yet another bbq (so spoilt) and they set up some fireworks for us, and introduced us to the world of cane toad hunting (all a bit wierd, these aussies are bonkers), but we had a right laugh, then were in bed by 9, cos it had been a long weekend!
Today we head off towards the Whitsundays. It'l take 2 days to get there and theres not much to see from here to there, so we'll try to get as far as wecan without stopping. We're just beginning to understand just how enormous Australia is. We have a sailing trip booked for Thursday for 2 nights, where I get to do a dive in the reef....really really excited, and we'll be camping at Airlie beach for a day before and after the trip. It's meant to be so beautiful there, so we're dead excited.
I didn't manage to put my pics on from my last journal entry, as the comuter here won't let me, so I have them, and then all of my birthday/fraser island ones, but i'll let you know once i've managed to get them on. Got some cute ones of me with my birthday cake, and my badges and cards. hehe
I'll mail again in a few days, having a great time.
