We have just arrived in Christchurch, New Zealand after three great days in Sydney. It's snowing here and very cold but we are prepared for it so it's not too bad. We're thinking our camper van's going to absolutely freezing though! We pick it up in two days.
We had such a brilliant time in Sydney and I have left feeling extremely jealous of the way Sydneysiders live. All that fresh air, beautiful scenery and opportunities to exercise outside are incredible. I went for quite a few runs while I was there and would love to be able to run along the coastal path there.
So what did we do there? On the first day we went to the world famous aquarium, which was fantastic. There was so much to see there. I particularly loved the Great Barrier Reef section which was so colourful and full with different shapes. After that we went over to Circular Quay, where the Opera House and Harbour Bridge are. It took me so long to realise I was actually looking at buildings I have seen in photos so many times. I just couldn't believe we were in Australia. We had a lush Thai meal that night, out at the beach suburb of Coogee.
The next day we got the bus back out there and spent a couple of hours doing the coastal walk to Bondai. Even though it was winter there we thought the weather was beautiful and really enjoyed the walk. Every turn revealed another perfect bay or natural pool, and we saw parrots and even whales! For ages we could see a school of three just making their way along the coastline.
Once we arrived a Bondai we had our lunch on the beautiful beach before exploring the area further. I tried to organise a scuba dive but because of our flight times it turned out that it wouldn't be possible. I'm going to dive in Peru though so I don't mind too much. The water at the beaches there just looked so clear that I was really keen to see what was living beneath the surface.
That evening, on the recommendation of my folks and Amanda, we went for dinner at Doyle's, a world famous fish and chips restaurant out at Watson's Bay. Getting there was a little complicated as the buses had stopped running, but after walking there we felt we'd earned our meal. We had a great table overlooking the bay which stretched all the way back to the Opera House and Harbour Bridge, and admired the view while enjoying our meal and a bottle of wine (we used your money for that Jim & Caz, thanks ever so much).
The next day we headed to Taronga zoo and karma greeted us at the door. As we were queuing to get in a middle-aged couple approached us and asked if we already had tickets. When we told them that we didn't they told us to go through with them as they had a special pass that allowed four adults in. We were gobsmacked! They saved us $80 (40 quid). We tried to offer them money but they were having none of it. The lady just said that we hoped someone would have done the same for her kids. It was so kind. The zoo was great and the views out over Sydney were first class. We particularly enjoyed seeing the 'roos and koalas but the whole thing was great.
After that we caught the ferry back over to the Opera House, which we then went on a tour of. I had no idea there were so many theatre there. The concert hall there was especially beautiful. We had already booked tickets to see a show that evening and it just so happened that the guys from the show (a magic/comedy show called 'Holy Cow!') were on our tour. They gave us all a little preview that was really clever. The full show later on lived up to the preview too. We had never been to magic show before but both really enjoyed it. Although we had only really booked so we could see something there, it turned out to be really good. I'm still trying to figure out how they did some of the tricks.
Better go now as I need to save my internet minutes to Skype my brother tomorrow. I hope you're all well though. Miss you, email us.
Love and hugs,
Laura
