Waking up to find my watch stolen and money that I had stupidly left in my jeans pocket gone was not a very good start to my day of travelling! I had gone to the atm the night before and had forgotten to put it in my wallet! The hostel didn't really seem to care and I had a huge argument with the cleaner who was so rude to me so I just let her have it. But the day did get better! I had my fruit for breakfast and then got some carrot and celery sticks to take with me on the train for lunch. Getting the subway to Pennsylvania Station was easier than expected. I had to walk two blocks to the subway station and then catch the 1 train to Penn Station. The only obstacles were the stairs. On the way down to the subway a very kind man helped me with one bag and from there it was easy. I bought my ticket for the subway seeing as my metrocard (7 days unlimited travel) had expired two days beforehand and then I was let in through the emergency exit gate rather than the turnstiles - phew, what a relief…I don't think it would have been humanly possible to get through those turnstiles! I went to the information desk at Penn Station and found out that you don't check bags in - you have to take them with you onto the train. Departing from Track 9East I almost fell down the escalator because became slightly unbalanced having my backpack on but luckily managed to steady myself before disaster struck!! I don't think the people on the escalator would have been to happy if I had fallen on them and I think I probably would have suffered more than just minor injuries! The train is great - very comfy with big seats that recline. The conductor took my ticket and said, "I won't ask you anything about the Partridge family, I promise" - I wouldn't know a thing even if he did ask me! I arrived at the hostel after a very hot and stair-ridden subway or 'T' as they call it here and checked in only to find the room hadn't been cleaned and my bed had nothing on it. So back down to reception to ask and they said they would sort it out. Well by 8pm it still wasn't sorted out so ended up getting all the sheets and things myself because as they say, 'if you don't' do it then no-one will!' There is a girl from Bunbury, Western Australia staying in my room so we went out to a bar down the road and had a drink while we watched a bit of the red sox baseball game. Had good old baked beans for dinner (who can resist at 79c a can?) I really wanted to go and see a baseball game while I was here but the cheapest ticket I can find is $85 so I think I'll just do the $10 Fenway Park tour instead. Free breakfast consists of bagels, muffins, the smallest apples you have ever seen and tea/coffee. Hey - but it's free!! After breakfast Leanne (girl from WA) and I went to the Boston Common public garden, which was really pretty. All the leaves are turning orange and falling off the trees so the park is scattered with wonderful orange and red leaves. We then went down to City Hall and to the Quincy Markets. It was here that my camera decided it really didn't like me and just stopped working. I took it to four camera shops and they all said that the lens framework had gone and the only solution would be to send it in to the manufacturers - who knows how much this will cost with postage, repair costs and everything!! So this week has been good…not!! I decided that I really needed a drink so headed off to a Mexican bar and ordered a banana margarita - was very yummy but it must have been made of gold because it was also very expensive!! I did find a farmers market though which was good!! Managed to buy four nectarines and four apples for $2!!! Yay!!! Tomorrow I am going on a walking tour of Harvard University - this place is so full of history it's unbelievable!! So exciting!!!
