11 Cruise Day!
Well our first full day at sea begins early with my having some e-reading time in the Solarium watching the sights as I have a coffee, croissant, and yogurt. Later Kelly and I have a regular breakfast in the Windjammer and took a walk around the deck
The ships arrival time at the Hubbard Glacier is scheduled for about 3:00. We checked out a lecture in the theatre about Glaciers. The speaker was a professor from Vancouver. It was interesting but I think both of us were finding it hard to keep our eyes open from the slow mundane voice he had…. :0
During lunch a little later at the rear (aft) of the ship someone spotted hump back whales. They were quite a distance behind us but I did not have my camera anyway L
AS the ship neared the fjord, we could see the glacier come into view. It was not until we got closer and closer did either of us appreciate the size of this. We were lucky that someone vacated their spot right at the rail!! We got right in there for the best possible photo ops!
The captain came over the loud speaker and said that he could probably bring us as close as 200m to the glacier. He succeeded. You cannot believe the colours, size or anything about what you're viewing. Our cameras will never be able to re-create what we were able to see.
There were so many burgies (less than 5m above the water line) and chunks of ice in the water. Then the calving began - when large pcs of the glacier fall into the water and become baby iceburgs. I hope my camera was able to capture one of these moments.
We stayed for 4 or more hours there as the amount of calving was highly unusual. However it caused an issue with the number of large chunks of ice that could be a danger to the propellers. It was decided by the bridge crew to go around this small island to our starboard side - not something they had done before - It was completed with no issues and we were on our way!
Kelly and I had reservations at the Samba Club where we enjoyed a fantastic meal that was to include 9- yes 9 cuts of Brazilian meats!! I stopped at 5 I think. Kelly got to 7!!!!! Then she actually was able to enjoy desert. For me not a chance. I was so full I went back to the state room and went to bed….lol. Party animal that I am NOT!
Tomorrow - Juneau. Capital of Alaska.

Mason Who yelled "I'm the King of the World" first? And what was your escape plan when the ship changed course??? And what's with the luxury dining??? Ithought you were on an expedition - you'd never catch me indulging like that! LOL! And I bet they don't set fire to bacon like Shar!!! Sounds spectacular! Looking forward to the pics! Oh and here's a tip - the ship will replay the ship lectures on your tv - at least if you fall asleep you are already in your stateroom!
Kelly the escape plan was.....there was no escape plan....all was totally under control ossifer! The bacon is good.....but nothing beats that shar-charcoaled taste!
